No notifications when screen locked

Suddenly my notifications have stopped on iPhone X .... if screen unlocked come through with sound and banner but if screen locked I only get them if I open the app ie messenger what’s app iMessage . Just randomly stopped. Also emails are only coming through if I refresh. I have checked the relevant notification / do not disturb / sounds and haptics settings I can think of ... tested speakers and updated software and nothing has worked ... any suggestions ?!
