The rubber around MacBook Pro screen melting...

Hi apple users,

I was so confused when I start to find some sticky dark lines on the edges of my MacBook, shock to realised it's from the black seal rubber around it's screen. I guess it starts to melt of...

So here I am looking forward to find some useful answers...

It's an MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), purchased around late august 2012 i believe.

I was very careful with it from the start, it was the most valuable thing i bought after school. It looks new and everything works fine till I noticed that problem...

Because it's weight... I do have an other MacBook air that i use more often & travel everywhere. I have to mention that without using it every day, I'm aware of shutting it down before i put down the screen. Never felt it gets too hot or hear any notable overworking strange noises... therefor, other than crazy hot summer weather, i couldn't think of any reason for this problem.

By touch, that rubber is hard but fragile now, some little parts still had a bit of stickiness and the screen top area (near camera) missed some rubber sections... also is the most damaged area so far. did't find any more rubber drop-offs lately...

I try to ask people who had same MacBook, but not able to fine any with the exact problem... the internet seems to find the common problem is usually caused by screen reparation. only few people with the same issue mostly mentions Apple recommend them to change their whole screen (with the price not much could agree), didn't provide any specific replacement for the rubber it self.

I never did any reparation for my mac and with it's condition I don't think I'll pay that much to replace it's screen. But also afraid to bring it to any shop...

I'll like to ask if anyone know what cause the rubber to melt of like that ?

Does Apple provide any specific replacement for the rubber part nowadays?

Is there better way to fix my this or should i just ignore this problem... ?

Thanks

MacBook Pro Retina

Yes, I'm having the same issue, the rubber gasket at the display edge near the opener melted or cracked off.

I've actually replaced the whole display in 2017 after it cracked due to a fall.

I hope someone from Apple can reply or address this matter.

Is it due to wear and tear or manufacturing defects?

Hello papa_teo, appreciate you could share with me which Apple store offered to replace whole screen for you.. I’m considering to take my MacBook Air with bezel Melt problem to that store for checking (MacBook Air bought within a year) Here in Penang, I got turned down by service dealer claiming it’s not under warranty. However, Apple limited warranty stated materials defects is covered under its limited warranty coverage. This bezel rubber melt issue obviously is a Material defect under normal usage.

I think you can get it changed because it is under warranty. It is material defect and it is not wear and tear since it is melting. You should email Apple to report this issue or go to an Apple Store if possible. They are more likely to help you than a service dealer.

Hihi,

how do you escalated to Apple? Via email ?

I try to raise up the issue but they send a software engineer to attend me via call.

He claimed that he is an software engineer and this is hardware issue. What’s he suggest me is changing the whole screen and paid the full amount.

urgh, I m so frustrating.

You’re right, paying $120 is still acceptable... because my screen still working perfectly fine...

Apple finally replaced my screen - 'as a gesture of goodwill' - after I brought the matter to a consumer tribunal. In countries where this option is available, it is the last resort if Apple refuses to fix the problem. I still dispute that it is a 'cosmetic issue' as it is clearly a material problem. The steps are fairly straightforward, please keep receipts and proof - screenshots, visits to repair centre - that you contacted Apple to resolve the problem. Then file your case.

Good luck.

Applecare does not cover the defect? I went to ALab (Apple authorised repair) at Plaza Sing, 1year warranty over, they wanted to charge for the whole lcd replacement. I feel that replacing with another lcd that will develop the same problem is pointless. In addition once they dismantle the macbook pro to replace, I wonder what else they may accidentally damage in the process

i have decided to just wait and see. Or next time throw the “rotten fruit brand” into the toilet and flush the brand off

They do not consider it as a defect, they claimed the rubber melting was due to environmental (heat etc) and is just a cosmetic issue. I told them this is not my first macbook. It happened to all my previous 3 MacBook Pro after warranty was over. Just happened this macbook 12inch is still covered under AppleCare, so I wanted to get it fixed. It doesn’t bother me much but I am shocked at AppleCare‘S coverage and the way the their technical advisers trying to push away this common problem.

i have a brand new macbook Pro 16inch With AppleCare+. So I asked them if I am able to claim the accidental damage to replace the whole screen if I get the same rubber melting issue. Their answer was Yes but they strongly discourage me from doing that as replacement the whole screen would cost at least $800. But that’s not my problem!

I am more disappointed in their response on this issue. The issue itself really doesn’t bother me much.

Same issue, here. The rubber around the screen has started to peel off my Macbook pro-2014 15 inch model. Plus, when I had a problem with the battery, I was advised that my Mac was quite old and they couldn't replace it, although I was willing to pay. They gave me a quote and mentioned that 'Apple certified' technicains would be able to do it for free. I fail to understand if technicians can do it why can't Apple itself do it.

Apple is aware that customers pay through their feet to buy Apple products and to decline service, and also not acknowledging that such an issue exists, is completely preposterous and atrocious on Apple's part.
