The rubber around MacBook Pro screen melting...

Hi apple users,

I was so confused when I start to find some sticky dark lines on the edges of my MacBook, shock to realised it's from the black seal rubber around it's screen. I guess it starts to melt of...

So here I am looking forward to find some useful answers...

It's an MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), purchased around late august 2012 i believe.

I was very careful with it from the start, it was the most valuable thing i bought after school. It looks new and everything works fine till I noticed that problem...

Because it's weight... I do have an other MacBook air that i use more often & travel everywhere. I have to mention that without using it every day, I'm aware of shutting it down before i put down the screen. Never felt it gets too hot or hear any notable overworking strange noises... therefor, other than crazy hot summer weather, i couldn't think of any reason for this problem.

By touch, that rubber is hard but fragile now, some little parts still had a bit of stickiness and the screen top area (near camera) missed some rubber sections... also is the most damaged area so far. did't find any more rubber drop-offs lately...

I try to ask people who had same MacBook, but not able to fine any with the exact problem... the internet seems to find the common problem is usually caused by screen reparation. only few people with the same issue mostly mentions Apple recommend them to change their whole screen (with the price not much could agree), didn't provide any specific replacement for the rubber it self.

I never did any reparation for my mac and with it's condition I don't think I'll pay that much to replace it's screen. But also afraid to bring it to any shop...

I'll like to ask if anyone know what cause the rubber to melt of like that ?

Does Apple provide any specific replacement for the rubber part nowadays?

Is there better way to fix my this or should i just ignore this problem... ?

Thanks

MacBook Pro Retina

Yes, I'm having the same issue, the rubber gasket at the display edge near the opener melted or cracked off.

I've actually replaced the whole display in 2017 after it cracked due to a fall.

I hope someone from Apple can reply or address this matter.

Is it due to wear and tear or manufacturing defects?

Oh sorry, my post was meant for the OP. I can't comment why yours is happening like that since I don't know how you use your machine daily but I've had 6 MacBook Pros, a MacBook and several Powerbooks and I've never seen this happen on any of my machines. Did you get AppleCare Plus? That would cover it.

Apple support does not participate here; these are user to user forums. We do not work for Apple.

In order to contact Apple, use the contact support link in the upper right corner of this page and start a repair ticket or go to your nearest Apple store (if open) or an authorized service provider.

I was on the phone with an Apple staff and was told they have never heard of this issue before. They booked a date for me to send my

macbook to a service provider. Before going there, I called the service provider and told them about this issue and also showed them the link to this page. Was told the same thing, changing rubber = changing screen. My MacBook was bought from Apple site, on Jul 2018. It’s a 2017 refurbished set. Noticed the rubber peeling early this year in Feb.

I have same issue with my MacBook Pro retina 15”. Really hoping to discover a straightforward solution. If anyone finds a workaround (not involving replacing the screen) I’d be very interested to hear it! I am not impressed by this Apple😏. Whilst mine is not terrible, but it is certainly worsening and now my eyes immediately focus on the areas affected by it, because I now know it’s there.

Good for u! Here in Singapore, the authorised dealer did not offer me free replacement. My warranty expired in Nov 2019. Disappointed. Did they make the current Macbook Pro to be biodegradable after a year? My iMac 2013 is still alive. My old Macbook Pro 2013 lasted until last year when the RAM died. The rubber remained good!

I have the same problem as the rest of you. This is really annoying as i really look after my products and my MacBook 12" still looks like the day i took it out of the box, it looks brand new. So to have the lid sticking down all the time is very annoying, it sometimes leaves black marks as well.

I think Apple should help customers out with getting these fixed, we pay a lot of money for these laptops and don't expect the rubber seals to start melting after a few years. Apple should either pay 80% of the cost to have it replace or maybe even do it for free. After all it is a manufacturing fault.

It does seem very unfair that we have spent so much money on these purchases in good faith. I never ever envisaged that this would have been a cause for concern at the time of making the purchase. I purchased my MacBook pro retina 15" in December 2016 in the UK and the store I purchased from gave me a 3 year warranty , but obviously this has expired as of December 2019-which is a great shame. However, I just came across this https://www.macrumors.com/2015/10/17/apple-mbp-ar-coating-quality-program-staingate/ and whilst it is not the screen itself that is damaged, but some could argue that this should qualify those experiencing this problem to be covered. I think it should be. Did anyone get their screen repaired under this or were you even aware that it existed-not sure if it is still available??

I have two MacBook pros early 2011and mid 2012. They are too sturdy and intact. Nothing to complain even today. The 2011 model's battery too is staying fine even after 1200 cycles. But the macbook pro of 2015 that I have is pathetic. Speaker gone bad, rubber gasket around screen gone bad. The apple service centre suggest screen replacement for a rubber gasket melting !!!

Apple is not happy with removing ports and enjoying income from dongles, now they want from every spare parts a MacBook can have !! I started feeling MacBook is almost like a soap bubble these days ! Alas, the brand was always known for its hardware consistency than its software

Thanks for starting this thread. I just got off the phone and chat about the same problem. My Air is 9 months old and the seal is also disintegrating. USELESS is about all I can say regarding AppleCare. It's my fault for 'cleaning' screen with glass cleaner - right. even though the screen is fine, it's the rubber that's falling apart, right? No use with chat either. Am told now that whole screen has to be be replaced even though screen is PERFECTLY fine. Let this be an expensive lesson on why not to buy Apple products in the future.

Im also having this kind of problem, and I've only bought and been using my Mac for only 3 months. Im really disappointed on apple because it seems that they didn't take this kind of matter into account. So I've been thinking if it would be a good idea to just buy a new rubber on a specific website and just bring my mac to an apple store for them to replace the rubber gasket and just pay for the labor? Screen replacement is very expensive just for a single strap of rubber.

Isn’t yours still under warranty?

My Macbook 13 inch still has not yet developed the well-known butterfly keyboard issue. Soon, i guess.

People have to make a legal case out of the “butterflies” to start a replacement program.

I really like the operating system. I dread migrating back to Windows.

you might forgot to unplug the charger after it is at 100% the battery can become hot on some devices

Incorrect. Once the device is fully charged, it can be left plugged in because it will not charge until the level is lower than 95%.

ANS: They CAN but if you only have a warranty on your MBP

That is incorrect. Apple will work on the machine (unless anyone but Apple or an authorized repair has opened it) - if it is out of warranty, you just have to pay for it.

ANS: if you start ignoring for too long the screen might come off so my suggestion is you can go to a repairing shop which you trust maybe...or like if you are an expert on fixing macBook you can just order the items

Not a good idea. Unless you are willing to forego any future support/repairs by Apple, you cannot open it or have it worked on by an independent unauthorized repair place. You also cannot order original replacement parts.

I second this... especially if you have extended Apple Care. I have now taken my case to a consumer tribunal and am pursuing this matter to whatever logical end as it is simply unacceptable that we have to fork out so much for such shoddy products.

Will update thread if there's any good news.
