I own an ipad pro of the first generation and need a new apple pen. Do I have to stick with the old one?

Will the 1st gen apple pencil work with the new iPad Air? Or will buyers be forced to get the 2nd Gen pen? I want to use my 1st gen pencil with the new iPad Air to be released this October

iPad Pro (1st generation) is only compatible with Apple Pencil (1st generation).
