I recently purchased a 2019 Macbook Air. I am wondering if there is a way to move apps/icons from the dock to desktop. Right now they either show that they will be "Removed" or go into the Trash. Thank you.

No, dragging from the Dock does indeed just delete that shortcut from the dock. If you wish to create a shortcut of an application on your desktop, you could drag that application from the Applications folder, this would create a shortcut of that app.
