You will not get the app on the Apple TV 3rd gen. The work around is by using an IPhone or IPad. On your IPhone or IPad download the Disney plus app and login in. Once logged in select a video to watch and play it on your iPhone or iPad. Once the video starts playing there will be an Apple Air Play button on the video window. Select the Apple Air button and a list of near by devices will pop up, select Apply TV. After you select the Apple TV under Air Play the video will begin to play from the device to the tv. Does that information help or would you like picture on how to perform this?

You don't seem to understand that it would be up to Disney to design the software for the Apple TV, AT3 3 are 8 year old technology. Tell me one technology company that would develop software for something 8 years old which is an antique in technology. Not that Apple TV 3 aren't perfectly functional for what they were originally designed for but they are 8 years old. You got your money's worth out of it, maybe it's time to upgrade.

it is 100% accurate.

iOS ver 4-7 (apple tv version of iOS)

Gen2 has not had an update since 6.2.1 September 14, 2014

iOS Ver 7 or 8 on 3rd Gen (apple tv version of iOS)

regular updates for bug fixes and "app" updates from 2014 to 2015 then nothing until...

7.2.1 released on February 25, 2016 - bug fixes

then no updates until....

7.2.2 released on December 6, 2017 - Amazon Prime added

then no updates until....

7.3 released on May 13, 2019 - Apple TV+ added

Apple shows the 3rd Gen as discontinued since 2016. End of Support is going to happen eventually.

Maybe try setting your tv picture setting to “scan” if available. Also, instead of screen mirroring, you can just tap the little airplay icon (like the picture below) when the video starts, then choose your Apple TV from there. You will need to keep the device unlocked so I suggest you plug it in and change the device screen settings to never turn off when plugged in.

That's pretty much the same way I look at this situation. It would be great if we could get Disney+ natively on our 3rd generation boxes, but considering they took the three Disney channels (Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior), it was a long shot that we'd be getting the Disney+. It's Disney's choice, not Apple's.

We were fortunate that Amazon gave us Prime Video on our Apple TV 3s.

This answer is misleading. Apple pushes app updates even though there's no "App Store". 3rd Gen didn't have an Amazon Prime app.... until it did. Apple -can- decide to just push a Disney+ app as an update (as they have countless others)... The just presently haven't chosen to do so or those doing the dev haven't succeeded or haven't done the dev on a Gen3 compatible app.

Apple did it because Amazon wanted them to. Apple can't force Disney to do the same.
