You will not get the app on the Apple TV 3rd gen. The work around is by using an IPhone or IPad. On your IPhone or IPad download the Disney plus app and login in. Once logged in select a video to watch and play it on your iPhone or iPad. Once the video starts playing there will be an Apple Air Play button on the video window. Select the Apple Air button and a list of near by devices will pop up, select Apply TV. After you select the Apple TV under Air Play the video will begin to play from the device to the tv. Does that information help or would you like picture on how to perform this?
As I remember, Apple was able to add Amazon Prime video to the 3rd gen Apple TV’s not all that long ago. They can do it for Disney but now that Apple is in the streaming game it’s highly unlikely. I’m not sure why they added amazon, it was surprising when it happened but they did so Cross your fingers for the same to happen to Disney
I do agree. The 3rd generation of Apple TV is outdated. Problem is that Apple made their product so well that it works better than many streaming devices on the market. I don’t think $150 for a 4th gen is worth it when there are many streaming devices out there for way less. I don’t have a 4K TV so there isn’t a need for their $200 device.
Totally agree with you about the value of the third gen Apple TV. But wasn’t it Apple that said that they are not supporting the 3rd generation Apple TV”s anymore? I could swear that I read that it would not receive any updates anymore.

But apple can add it as they did with Prime which was not on my apple TV when I purchased it.
It's not Apple that would add it. Disney would have to make it work for the older ATV.
For me the decision was easy. $25 Roku Express was a perfect option to stream Disney+.
You can always suggest that to Apple at www.apple.com/feedback
Apple added AppleTV+ to 3rd Gen this past week. Disney+ will likely end up doing the same...eventually. IMO
This was the best answer out there!! Highly upset I cannot get it on my bedroom TVs. So $40 fire sticks are definitely the answer! Thank you!
Thanks for the confirmation from Apple support. I've had the 2nd gen Apple TV for years. I don't see any reason to upgrade my Apple TV when I can put that money towards a Smart TV. Apple has updated and added apps and features to my Apple TV plenty of times (including this past week). I'm not sure why they won't just add Disney + as well.
What I don’t understand when you say that only gen 4 & 5 allows apps is that the Apple TV app was added to my gen 3 when there was a software update. This seems more like Apple just doesn’t care to add the Disney+ app then it not being capable of adding it.
I’m extremely disappointed about this. I have an Apple TV 4K on my living room but I also have three others 3rd gen in each bedroom that are basically useless with Disney+. Why am I upset? I paid $150 retail price for each of those 3rd gen Apple TVs when a Roku was half the price and still able to run Disney+. What makes me more upset is that these “obsolete” Apple TVs can run Apple’s new streaming service but not the competition. #Fail
I didn’t buy the 3rd gens in 2017. I know it’s been years since they were released and my point, as previously mentioned, is that a Roku or Fire TV from that same generation can play the new streaming services this Apple TV 3rd gen can’t. I do have the most expensive 4K Apple TV and I love it, but cannot justify buying three new ones just to stream one App. I would also wish Apple would get their head out of their own behind every once in a while but they just released the new MacBook Pro 16 with the fixed keyboard, so I guess I’ll take it.
That is inaccurate. The third generation and earlier generations are given software updates with the new apps released. You are able to get it on alder generation apple TVs, you just have to wait for the update.

Apple would rather sell new devices than fix the old ones. This line of thinking is why I have moved away from Apple entirely.
What company are you now buying hardware from that doesn't want you to keep buying new devices?
Half of the Apple board is (or was) also on the Disney board. Lack of partnership desire is almost certainly not the issue.
They don't seem to realize how many potential customers they might lose. Oh well. Too bad for them, I suppose.
