ERROR: This file server will not allow any additional users to log on.

I recently upgraded my departments iMac's from Sierra (10.12.6) to High Sierra (10.13.6). Since then, I am unable to connect from one Mac to another via File Sharing. All Mac's have File Sharing enabled along with all necessary settings. I have SMB enabled and AFP disabled. I connect using:

smb://IP address

The error I get says:

"This file server will not allow any additional users to log on. Try to connect again later."

I am the only user who connects to the other Mac's and the Mac's show that no users are connected.

Things tried:

  1. Rebooted.
  2. Disabled/Rebooted/Enabled File Sharing.
  3. Played with a number of config settings in the nsmb.conf file.
  4. Removed the nsmb.conf file altogether.
  5. Tried connecting via CIFS - same error.

I have one Mac that still uses Sierra and am able to connect to all High Sierra Mac's without error so this seems to be an issue within High Sierra?

Anyone have the answer?

Thank you in advance,

jm

Hi BDAqua,

No favorites though clicking Browse does show the other machines. When I double-click one of the machines, it immediately says "Not Connected" but when I click Connect As, I can put in the user name and password and it connects! Now, here's the interesting thing which I have never seen before. I clicked the hard drive icon of the other Mac I connected to and got info. Usually, what I would see next to "Server" is: smb://<IP Address>/<Share Name>

Instead, what I see is:

If I type all the above into the "Connect to Server" window, I can successfully connect to my other workstations but do I...really...have to type all that in??? Why can't I just type in smb://<IP Address>/<Share Name> or just smb://<IP Address>?

Thanks,

jm

Well, once typing that in click on the + icon to add it to Favorites, or...

If they in fact do show up on the Desktop, then create a new Folder maybe named Shares on/in the Desktop, drag all those Shares shown on the Desktop to that Folder, drag that Folder to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash, this should give you a popup menu to select from.:-)

Mount that Share once, then once the Globe Icon shows up on the Desktop, drag that Globe Icon to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash. You now have a Dynamic Mount, a quick click on the Icon in the Dock will connect you.

On the multiple Shortcuts...

Mount them all, when show up on the Desktop, then create a new Folder maybe named Shares on/in the Desktop, drag all those Shares shown on the Desktop to that Folder, (you can even rename them once there, if you wish), drag that Folder to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash, this should give you a popup menu to select from.:-)

To automount them, drag those Aliases to the Accounts Pref Pane's Login Items Window.
