All files on flashdrive but they say "zero bytes" - please help!

After plugging in my usb flashdrive I noticed that all my files say "zero bytes." I have been using this flashdrive for about a year without problem. I think it may have been improperly ejected. There are years worth of lesson plans on it, I'd appreciate any advice.

The files:

All the files have their correct names and dates. When I open a file, it opens in the correct program (either Word or Powerpoint), but the document is blank. As there are different document types, I don't think it is related to Word, but to the flash drive. I was able to successfully save a new sample word doc with writing to the flash and see the size.

What I've tried:

  • Tried Disk management first aid - no change.
  • Tried the USB on another Macbook and saw the same thing- all the correctly named files with blank documents ("zero bytes")
  • Tried iBoysoft Data Recovery on documents. When I tried to open Word said: "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened" --> also "Word found unreadable content..."

Flashdrive: Kingston Digital 64 GB Data Traveler SE9 G2 USB 3.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9G2/64GBET).

I'm using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017) on HighSierra 10.13.6.

Reset your SMC and Your NVRAM.

Changes occur, and sometimes, as a result, your macOS’ operations become manipulated, technically. So, reset the above, as a way to get back to default operations.

Three Thoughts:

Transfer these Files. Use Copy & Paste.

Incase this Flash Drive is going dead, transfer this to an alternative external storage device.

Scan your Mac with MalwareBytes for Mac:

First, download it; scan with it; remove what is found; then uninstall It.

Contact MS. Request a New License Key:

Contact Microsoft, and ask if a license key swap would have any fix in a bug causing this this. Use these links:

Contact a professional data recovery service such as Drive Savers or Ontrack. Both of these vendors are recommended by Apple and other OEMs and both vendors provide free estimates.

USB sticks are not the most reliable devices. I've had multiple USB sticks including several Kingston USB sticks produce multiple bit errors and behave oddly on some Macs. Most of these errors go unnoticed by most people unless you explicitly check for the bit errors.

You should always have good verified working backups of your data and not rely on just a single copy of the data. The more important the data, then the more copies you should have.
