MacOS Catalina crashes at shutdown

After upgrade to Catalina, my MacBook Pro 15" (2019) crashes on every shutdown. After I click shutdnown button, there's a spinning wheel for about 3 minutes, and computer crashes, then reboots with attached crash log. So far, I've tried:

  • Resetting SMC
  • Resetting NVRAM
  • Reinstalling MacOS
  • Removing all lauch agents and login events

Yet, the issue still persists. Is there any fix to this? I've seen other people report this bug aswell, but no solution so far.

As you tried all the usual fixes and took out login items as I would have suggested then the only things left are

  • Hardware problem (less likely but cannot be ignored)
  • background runnning app which you may have restored along with the OS and of course I am talking third part Antivirus, Security, cleaner and booster apps. All are death to MAcs.

If you reinstall Catalina *clean* as if you were going to sell the Mac, if it still crashes then consider the first possibility.

Hey guys, Apple are not ignoring you as Apple are not here, but making spamming threats will not bring out the expert volunteers either.

And the usual fixes for those who didn't follow the community specialist are

Do all three of these things

NVRAM reset

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

SMC reset

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Safe Boot

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262#issue

then restart as normal

CleanMyMac is considered by most here to be akin to malware. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. There is no need to use any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up" or anti-virus apps on a Mac.

If you want to know how to protect your Mac read this user tip: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community

Also, as Peter has already suggested boot into Safe Mode. The clears out caches, system and swap files and repairs the disk during boot.

Hey SteadyDisorder,

I understand when shutting down your MacBook Pro, it crashes and then restarts again with a crash log. I'll be happy to help out.

It sounds like you've followed most of the steps from here: If your Mac spontaneously restarts or displays a message that it restarted or shut down because of a problem - Apple Support. Have you also followed the steps to determine if this is a hardware issue? If not, try those steps now.

If you're still unable to resolve this, Contact Apple Support directly for a further look into this.

Take care.

Hello Joseph,

I've tried all of these steps, and issue stil persists, even when my MacBook is not connected to anything besides power supply (no external devices at all). Also, this problem never hapened before Catalina update, and I can see other people reporting this as well, so it's very unlikely to be caused by hardware.

What are the next steps I can take?

I suspect this is related to certain command-line tools and/or utilities.

Among other things, I do open-source development on my machine (Ruby, NodeJS, PostgreSQL), and after using these tools in Terminal, my Mac Pro reliably crashes on shutdown.

However, during login sessions when I don't use any command-line tools, but use macOS apps like Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro instead, the computer does not crash on shutdown.

Yes I have tried all the items you have suggested but it's really a mute point isn't it. I haven't added anything or changed anything substantially to my iMac since Mojave and this problem didn't exist then so it has to be a bug with Catalina doesn't it?

That being the case then it's an apple issue, and hence should be something apple needs to address.

I do not believe telling affected users they have to clean install the OS and virtually "start again" as being an acceptable solution.

Do you not agree?

Anything on my Mac has come from the apple App Store. No idea what A/V is sorry.

As you can see by the number or threads on this issue and by the growing number of people saying they have the same issue (even with brand spanking new machines), how can anyone argue it's not an apple issue?

Does apple themselves not monitor these threads at all?

Mr No Idea 247, Apple are not here, you are shouting into empty space.

A/V for your information is antivirus, like Norton or Avast. We on the forum see a lot of problems after reading Etrecheck reports that were fixed by uninstalling A/V or Mac Cleaner apps that run in the background. It is not an obvious bug if you install snake oil apps that create a deadly embrace with Mac's inbuilt protection. Had you been the original poster I might have suggested attaching an Etrecheck report.

Just because apps are on App Store does not mean they will not cause problems. I have paid for apps recently that were 32bit apps that wrongly claimed to be suitable for my Mac. Fortunately App Store purchases are relatively easy to obtain a refund for in such cases, which is one of the protections of the App Store.
