Converting mp3 to audiobook? Not a thing anymore?

I save CD audiobooks onto my computer. They initially transfer as music files and I manually switch them to audiobook. That option is not available in Music. How can I change these into audiobooks? I tried syncing directly to the phone from my computer, but I have Cloud Music Library so it won't let me.

Hello janacjb,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities!

I see from your post that you want to know how you can convert mp3 files to audiobook files in macOS Catalina.

Please note that the files you want to convert must be downloaded to your computer. They cannot be available to download from the iCloud Music Library. If the file shows the icon, you must click on it in Music and download it first.

This is still possible by following these steps:

  1. Open the Books app on your Mac.
  2. Locate the audio file that you want to be converted to an audiobook in Finder or Spotlight.
  3. In the Books app, click the Audiobooks section on the left sidebar under "Library".
  4. Click and drag the file from Finder or Spotlight to AudioBooks in the Books app.

Once the file has been brought over you can then add it to your collections in the Books app.

I hope this information helps you!

Cheers.

Import the tracks into Music. Change the names or sort names of the tracks into a standard <Book>, Part ## form where the part numbers are sequential. See Organizing audiobook chapters - Apple Community for background. The script would need a little tweak to replace "iTunes" with "Music" to work with the Music app. Once the metadata is correct you can import the tracks into Books and remove from Music.
