iTunes Remote app and Catalina Music

Music is installed under Catalina on my MBP, Good.

On my XS I have iTunes Remote

It can see and browse my music library. Good.

It cannot control my music. Bad.

Either I need a different remote app, (which please?) or the iTunes Remote app needs to become the Music Remote app.

Thoughts and advice, please?

iPhone XS, iOS 13

Hi

I had that problem too. Here's a solution, which takes you back to where you were: Remote works again: hurrah!

Here's what worked for me- others may be able to take out a step, and make it more economical...

  1. download the latest Catalina version (15.2). (This is meant to make Remote work again. And I thought it would, but it doesn't at first).
  2. Delete the Remote App from your device. (I'm not sure if this is necessary, but it seemed a good idea and didn't take time).
  3. Re-install the Remote App.
  4. Set up HomeSharing. (Be sure your Mac and your device are on the same WiFi network).
  5. DO NOT choose to set up Homesharing 'automatically' by logging onto the same Apple ID. (At least this didn't work for me- I was just back where I was with everyone else, able to see my Music library, but unable to control it). Instead...
  6. Choose to set up HomeSharing manually.
  7. Your device will give you a 4 digit code, and tell you to enter it within iTunes. (Come on Apple: keep up now...)
  8. Go to Music on your Mac, and half way down on the left, you'll see an icon representing your device, click it, and enter the code.
  9. You're done.

I hope that works for others.....

Hi. Thanks for that. How big is your Music library on your Mac? Mine is isn't large but by doing that, it takes forever for the playlists to appear. That's fair enough but when the security screen pops on and you go back to Music, you have to sit and wait for Music to scan or do whatever it is doing. Although the functionality of the Remote is there, the speed is just too slow. Dunno. I've done all the stuff you suggested some time ago and would still like the Remote fixed. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi John,

Brilliant. I updated all my stuff but only now had a chance to follow your instructions because I noticed that my Catalina Music did not appear on the remote. It does now.

All I did was turn off HomeSharing in the app and turn it back on. Then connect manually for both iPhone and iPad. But I suppose it would be better to get rid of it all by deleting the app and re-installing.

What I have noticed is there is some latency when going back to the playlists; some not much. Also I had two Mojave iTunes libraries connected and they have disappeared completely. No problem as they were the ones I was using when I couldn't connect to Catalina Music.

All I can say is "Cool"! and of course thanks.

And one more thing...

After posting this and realising that there may be several ways to make this work and that it isn't automatic, I would just think of the procedure as a kludge and not a fix.

I think Apple rolled this out as it would ruin the holiday season for people who got new Macs (they all ship with Catalina).

It does not allow users with family networks of Catalina and Mojave (for example) to share each other's playlists as it did before.

I should imagine a fix will be along in 2020. I hope so.

Bill
