Pages: move with text option is grayed out

hi, I need to have a connection line inline with text, and for some reason that option cannot be selected. Apparently any other object I insert is inserted as inline, but not this. Any suggestions?

thanks

Alex

"hi Barry, thank you for your answer... although I'm pretty sure it was meant for another thread...:-)"

You're right! That's the trouble with having several tabs open in Safari.

I did write a response to your question as well. I wonder where that went.

Regarding your question, this seems to be the intended behaviour of the line shapes. Unlike other pasted objects—which default to Move with text, with wrap set to Automatic, the line shapes default to Stay on page (with the same wrap setting) and do not offer the Move with text option.

There is one exception, though—the "Draw with pen" choice (at the bottom of the Shapes button menu in my older version of Pages) can be set to Move with text, as seen below.

The arc shown in the text above is pinned to the end of the word 'accumsan'. The pin is not visible in this screen shot as the curve is not selected. Below, I've pasted a new paragraph (in italics) into the text above the arc. Note that the arc has been carried down the page with the text that was pushed down by the inserted paragraph. I've also selected the curve to reveal its blue pin at the location described.

Regards,

Barry

Hi Alex,

If these columns contain entered data (not data calculated by formulas in the cells) you can simply select all of the cells containing the data, then press delete.

BUT this will change the values in any cells depending on the content of these cells, or depending on values in cells that depend on the values in these cells.

If you have not modified the original template (or have made only easily replicated modifications to it) your best move is likely to do this:

  • Continue using the current document to the end of the year.
  • At the end of the year, use the template to create a new document for the following year. Populate the starting values with the end of year values from the previous year's document.
  • Save the 2019 document. Use to 2020 document for the next year.

If you have made modifications to the original template, and those modifications will be difficult to replicate, do this:

  • Save the current document as a template (File > Save as Template). (This template will be temporary.)
  • Open a new document from the new template.
  • Edit the new document to contain placeholder values for the starting values (see the original template for examples). You will replace these with actual values in the document you start at the beginning of each year.
  • Delete all of the transaction values entered through the year.
  • Save the new document as a template, replacing the temporary template created above.

At the end of each year, use this template to create a new document for the coming year, fill in the current starting values, and carry on.

Regards,

Barry
