Macbook Sleep Wake failure in EFI (Failure code:: 0xffffffff 0x0000001f)

I have two macbook's, one model end 2018 and one model begin 2019.

They both suffer from the same problem with a fresh installation (also reset NVRAM, PRAM, SMC).

The crash reason: Sleep Wake failure in EFI

Failure code:: 0xffffffff 0x0000001f

I already contacted Senior Support for this and have a running case for both.

If you run into the same problem, please let me know here.

To trace down the problem more info of different devices can be useful.

If I get feedback that solves it, I'll post it here.

I had the same problem, and finally found a very odd solution. In my case, after a lot of frustrating work, I traced the problem to an old USB hub I was using on my new mac. Once I disconnected the old USB hub, the problem immediately stopped. In my case, it was surprising and very lucky to discover that the problem seemed to be associated with an attached electronic component. Hope this helps you.

I have had this problem for years, going back to when MacOS High Sierra came out and they made the switch to APFS. At the time I was still under AppleCare and tried repeatedly to get it fixed. No one has any clue, just the same tired advice over and over again..."Did you try a fresh install?"..."Did you reset the NVRAM?"

My favorite part of the MacBook Air was that I could just close the lid and the battery lasted seemingly forever, until I needed to use the computer. Now I open my backpack and find the battery dead because for some reason the computer wakes itself when its closed and runs the fan at max speed until it dies. When it doesn't do this, I open the screen and there's a bright flash of light and then the computer restarts, then another bright flash, then it restarts again. This has completely ruined using this as a portable, there when you need it solution.

I'm posting my log as well in case it helps anyone, but at this point I think I'm done with Apple. Shrugging and waiting for me to buy a new $2,000 laptop isn't customer service, especially when this is a huge, widespread issues affecting thousand of customers.

Same problem here, for months. I can no longer use my MacBook as a portable. I'm very sad to read that the problem is still not resolved. At the moment I'm looking for a replacement for my MacBook Pro from 2014 and would like to buy a 16" Pro, but certainly not which such problems. Its a shame that bugs in Apple software become more common in the last years.

Same issue with a 2019 16" MacBook Pro. The laptop will immediate have a blank display (keyboard lights stay on) when I try to go to sleep AND have my Dell P2720DC external monitor plugged in. Laptop goes to sleep fine if the monitor is not plugged in.

Tried the following and no luck:

  1. Reset SMC
  2. Tried connecting USB-C on monitor to Thunderbolt: Does not work.
  3. Tried connecting HDMI to USB-C hub --> Thunderbolt: Does not work.
  4. Tried connecting HDMI to HDMI-->USB-C adapter --> Thunderbolt: Does not work.

I am on Catalina 10.15.5

Oct 10, 2020 12:12 AM in response to mariusvw

I have the same issue, 3 days ago, on a new MacBook Pro 13", 2019 two thunderbolt, on Catalina. Mac was both on 3 october 2019, 1 year warranty.

So the warranty is just finished.

I've tried everything, even upgrade to Big Sur, nothing works!

Is just restarting by himself, the Touch Bar is flickering and and flashing for 2-3 seconds and then restarts.

Apple, pls do something!!!

Sadly no, reporting to Apple respond with reinstalling empty and start over, problem is that I don’t have time doing this over and over again.

I understand they are trying to pin down the cause. Wondering if a 16” model has this issue too with the same software I use. Thinking of buying one to try cause these crashes are a pain in the *** :)

Especially because iCloud resyncs all data every time and takes up days to complete.

same I have this issues too on Catalina 10.15.3 for MacBook Air 2019

I bought my MacBook to apple almost 10 time by now and spoke to plenty of worker at the genius bar but none of them were able to find a solution for it. its getting so annoying at this point putting your computer to sleep and unable to wake it up unless you hard reset it losing progress on work.

Just got off with Apple support. This fixed my problem.

Open up the Terminal and copy and paste this into the command line:

kextstat | grep -v com.apple

you will get a list of third party kernel extensions.

In my case it was a recently installed instillation driver for an external hard drive that was the problem. I used “CleanMyMac” to uninstall the instillation program and rebooted and am all set.

If that doesn’t work for you, go to the Apple tech support chat link on the support page and give them the failure code. They were really good at walking me through diagnosing it. Escalated the issue quickly and were about to have an engineer call me before the driver fix worked.

Mar 8, 2020 12:10 PM in response to daver234234

There sure are a lot of people in these forums trying to get me to install random software to "fix" my problem...

In case nobody checked the article, it appears this Sleep Wake Failure pertains to SSDs -

When the system wakes, the drive isn't waking as quickly - for a moment, the computer thinks there is no storage medium attached and crashes. OWC is aware of the issue and has been working with Apple Support to get a driver fix available. However, this applies to all SSDs not just OWC. As of reading the article, it appears there IS NO FIX besides disabling "Standby Mode". No amount of free software from the App store will fix this problem. Apple will have to push an update.

Mar 8, 2020 1:53 PM in response to wb127

You've pretty much described my case, except that I have a MB Air 2013. I also taught my battery was dead and installed a new one. Recently, I also made a clean install of OSX (didn't restore from Time Machine), but the problem remains. I also think this started happening to me after I installed Catalina.

Besides this, I'm also experiencing an even more annoying problem - when I charge my laptop while working and the percentage gets above 40%, the computer randomly shuts off - it seems to me it goes to sleep, but it won't wake up easily, it does not respond to keyboard, touchpad or power button for about a minute or two. My temporary solution for now is to disconnect the charging cable when that happens and I work on battery.

Mar 11, 2020 3:35 AM in response to BearsBeetsBattlestarGalactica

I don't want anyone to think that I am trying to get them to download software. I was just detailing the steps that worked for me. I don't endorse, work for or in any other way profit or have any interest in that software product.

I don't want that to distract from the main point of my post which was that deleting that driver completely solved my problem, despite what the guy with the clever username says above. There IS INDEED a fix.

Mar 11, 2020 4:00 AM in response to daver234234

Personally I advice people to not use CleanMyMac since it brings a lot of issues if you use it wrong.

I don't see your writing as app promotion tho, for some people it might actually work without having much tech knowledge.

But in reaction to your point about the kernel module, in my case I was using docker, I tested my situation by unloading the kernel module at first and see what happens, after 2 weeks without crashing I removed docker completely.

They are working on a solution but I don't have the time to wait for it at the moment.

kextstat | grep -v com.apple
kextunload com.mariusvw.SomeModule

Then move the module aside or uninstall the application to ensure it does not get loaded again by rebooting.
