Macbook Sleep Wake failure in EFI (Failure code:: 0xffffffff 0x0000001f)

I have two macbook's, one model end 2018 and one model begin 2019.

They both suffer from the same problem with a fresh installation (also reset NVRAM, PRAM, SMC).

The crash reason: Sleep Wake failure in EFI

Failure code:: 0xffffffff 0x0000001f

I already contacted Senior Support for this and have a running case for both.

If you run into the same problem, please let me know here.

To trace down the problem more info of different devices can be useful.

If I get feedback that solves it, I'll post it here.

I had the same problem, and finally found a very odd solution. In my case, after a lot of frustrating work, I traced the problem to an old USB hub I was using on my new mac. Once I disconnected the old USB hub, the problem immediately stopped. In my case, it was surprising and very lucky to discover that the problem seemed to be associated with an attached electronic component. Hope this helps you.

Every release of Catalina has come with a new set of firmware...every minor release. This also is a problem because it means trying out the dot release on a separate SSD now also updates your MAC firmware meaning that you install on the internal SSD will now inherit new firmware and any bugs that came with it. YOu could try and see if your machne is up to date with firmware and that it updated correctly. Apparently failure to update the firmware does not stop the OS upgrade so you can get upgraded but be running wrong firmware. Apple stopped allowing you to upgrade firmware separately outside the OS upgrade but also does not publish what is the correct firmware. You could try some thing like below to check your firmware versions.

Personally I've ceased doing any upgrades at all due to the problems with external monitors with Catalina between, resolution, HDR and incorrect resolutions etc. I've not tried the above program but at least it may tell you if its worth while reinstalling the OS again as that is the only way to update the firmware.

Same issue on my daughter's older Macbook Pro retina 13-inch 11,1 Late 2013.

She was running Mojave and had a nearly full 120 GB Hard-drive. She was having performance issues because of the full drive. The described restarting behavior did not exist at that time.

I replaced the HD with a new 480 GB Internal SSD (from OtherWorld Computing) and migrated the files with time machine. I also installed TechTool and Norton 360.

Unattended restarts began after that--usually in the middle of the night or early morning with the laptop closed but sleeping.

I first did a scan with Techtool and found a single voltage issue that I believe is traceable to a third party power adapter--which I am replacing (not yet arrived). This problem pre-existed the restarting issue as it was detected on a tech tool scan months ago. Not likely the cause of this new behavior.

I found no other issues with TechTool. I cleared the pRAM. It did not fix the restarts. I upgraded the software to Catalina from Mojave. It did not fix the restarts. I recleared the pRAM. No improvement.

My next steps are to open the laptop and recheck the HD connections. If that does not fix the issue, I will uninstall Norton and Techtool to see what happens. I will also check if a new power supply helps, but she has had the current non-apple power supply for months but only experienced restarts since the HD update.

The most likely culprit is the new HD. The problem existed before and after Catalina, so I can't blame it on the Catalina OS. There are no attached peripherals. The machine was not plugged in during the restarts. I am attaching the crash error log below in case it's helpful to someone.

Please post solutions and I will post updates as I experiment further.

I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro non-retina 13" 2012 with SSD (Samsung, replaced it myself) and new battery.

As suggested on Reddit, a workaround is the following:

sudo pmset -a standby 0

But this is not a fix as the Mac will not really "sleep" anymore and battery drains faster. It just prevents the random shutdowns/reboots.

Apple has to fix this, my MacBook is hardly usable like that!

Having the same problem (mid 2012 MBP running Catalina). Battery will drain like crazy. Seems like it never really "goes to sleep". If the battery is below 40% this is almost a guarantee. When it starts back up I get a double startup. Screen will flash then reboot a second time. Really annoying. Just installed a brand new battery to try to fix the problem but no fix. Here is my screenshot.

Same for me. We have the same MacBook and the same error message. And just like you I replaced my battery a few weeks ago, too!
