Macbook Sleep Wake failure in EFI (Failure code:: 0xffffffff 0x0000001f)

I have two macbook's, one model end 2018 and one model begin 2019.

They both suffer from the same problem with a fresh installation (also reset NVRAM, PRAM, SMC).

The crash reason: Sleep Wake failure in EFI

Failure code:: 0xffffffff 0x0000001f

I already contacted Senior Support for this and have a running case for both.

If you run into the same problem, please let me know here.

To trace down the problem more info of different devices can be useful.

If I get feedback that solves it, I'll post it here.

I had the same problem, and finally found a very odd solution. In my case, after a lot of frustrating work, I traced the problem to an old USB hub I was using on my new mac. Once I disconnected the old USB hub, the problem immediately stopped. In my case, it was surprising and very lucky to discover that the problem seemed to be associated with an attached electronic component. Hope this helps you.

I’m currently liaising with Apple Support who believe it’s an hardware issue. It happens at varying percentages now. The highest being 91%. I should receive a further update from them over the next couple of days after they’ve analysed the system report they asked me to run. I shall update on here once I find out 👍🏻

So I’ve been on with Apple Support a few times now trying new things. Seeing if it occurs with WiFi and bluetooth off - which it

does and seeing if it occurred after setting up a new user account - which it did. I was asked to video record the boot issue and send it on to Apple which I have. Just awaiting further instructions from them and again I will update once I hear back 🙌🏻

Initially my MacBook boot issues would happen when battery was less than around 50% but recently it happened at 91% too 🤦🏼

I had this same problem once I upgraded to Big Sur OS, and performed a Clean OS Install, and it resolved this problem.

Your best bet is to perform a Clean install of your OS system.

Here's a nice tutorial video on how to create a bootable USB drive, which may be helpful.

You may think it's a lot of work performing the clean install, but this will certainly like to fix your problem, hence, stop wasting your time troubleshooting and get with it.

Good luck

I have this same issue. I found it to be one of two things for me: (1) the external monitor i was using can cause my laptop to crash and/or (2) the dongle used to connect to the external monitor. Both of these only started with the catalina.

took MOOOONTHS to figure this out for me.

I switched the monitor and it doesn't happen anymore. next is getting a better dongle.

Hopefully this helps someone!

Same problem on a mid 2012 Macbook Air 11" running Catalina, 10.15.7 build 19H512

Went through resetting SMC with Apple Support this morning but it still wouldn't turn on. They told me to take it for repair in person (except everything's shut and I'm not leaving the house because of the pandemic, you know how it is.)

Mum brought me a cup of tea. Showed her how the thing wouldn't turn on. It turned on.

Fresh Catalina install about two weeks ago and I reset SMC and NVRAM earlier this week trying to fix what I thought was a problem with the device not sleeping when the lid was closed (in the end this was a me problem, not a device problem.)

I again tried a fresh install of Big Sur to no avail.

My MacBook still black screens.

It did this as I was updating my user profile picture. When I pressed the power button again and logged in, it was still on the screen waiting for me to update my photo.

I don’t believe it is an hardware issue. I believe it’s a bug, but until it’s identified, it will always be around!

Same issue with a late 2013 running Catalina - reset everything - still occurs... Did not occur with Mojave.

If I close machine while on without the power connected - when I go to open it a few hours or a day later it will restart:

Anyone else experiencing any improvements on this issue since the latest Big Sur 11.2.2 update? I was mitigating the issue by disabling power naps, wake functions etc. and since the latest update I went ahead and re-enabled all available functions relating to battery/sleep/wake for power saving, so far so good. If this is a fix, I will be very happy that it was addressed, although it will be with some disappointed with Apple for releasing an OS upgrade in such a way that has lead a whole bunch of us to have post in this support discussion to feel noticed - this seems scarily reminiscent of MS windows philosophy of "release first and damage control later" software development and resolution tactics delivered back in the day to enable product releases.

I personally have been using Macs since the first appeared on the market, and updating my Mac OS has usually generated excitement and interest, and in my experience, there were very few to no glitches, consistently. And there were not near as many patches back to back following the OS upgrades as there are now - not sure of the timing of these changes,, but sure feels like a change has occurred.

Keeping my fingers crossed :)

When I spoke to Apple I was advised to take it in for them to look at. Obviously they’re not open at present. I just hope they honour the warranty as that’s now passed but due to multiple lockdowns, it was never going to get looked at.

Right now I’m sitting on a £1500 portable paperweight because it can’t be taken anywhere without a mains supply 🤬

Cannot understand why Apple haven’t addressed this!
