Opening files APP with SMB URL

OK, I have an issue where I want to open an SMB connection in the files app via a webclip pushed out to over 200 iPads with iPadOS installed. I got the path and webclip to work, using smb://username:password@server . This opens the complete URL into safari and then proceeds to open in the files app. I had to screen record as everything flashes really quick but the connection never opens. When looking at the recording, I noticed the connection string in files app has changed to smb://username@server . Missing the password. Is this by design? or am I going the wrong way about this.

I just need to automate connection to shares using the native app. 3rd party apps we use do not support SMB2 or 3, so after our upgrade to server 2016 they no longer work (Goodreader, we are looking at you)......

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Easiest solution is: As I don't include a username and password in the SMB path, it works. So I can then at least automate the mounting of a network share via a Webclip and then get the files app to ask for SMB credentials.
