How do you fix an “authentication error” trying to sign into an account on the MacBook Air

Verification Failed message I cannot login to Apple ID on MacBook Air. I can login on websites (ex. apple icloud). When I attempt to login on macbook, I get a message that says "verification failed." I contacted apple support and had someone call me. They said they thought it was related to my home internet connection? Weird iCloud Authentication Errors I keep having an issue with iCloud on my MacBook Pro (Early 2015 model, up to date software) where even though my credentials are all correct, the system re-prompts me for my credentials routinely and then rejects them, even though the ID and password are correct. It doesn't say why it rejects them. It just says "an authentication error occurred." My only resort is to reset my ID, which of course is a serious pain with Apple. It's also happening with my Google account in the "internet accounts" tab in settings. Again, username and password are correct, it just tells me an error occurred, inexplicably.

unable to verify account or password OK, so I've seen a lot of posts about this, but most of them seem to be dead ends becaue they are poorly written, or because they are about mail accounts. I am unable to log into Facebook, Twitter, or Flikr in System Preferences > Internet accounts. unable to verify account or password (username removed in pic - i'm pretty sure you know what I mean, but I'm not going to assume) Passwords have been verified by logging in on Firefox. Two-factor authentication is off. I've tried logging in using another user account on the machine and am getting the same results. Macbook Pro Early 2011, Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6 16GB ram. Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It looks like no one has responded to your question. Here are a couple things that might help others answer your question:

1.) What type of account are you trying to sign into (Apple ID, email account, etc.)?

2.) What macOS version do you have installed? Check by clicking  > About This Mac.

3.) What is the exact text of the error message?
