I am unable to update a brand new iphone. When I attempt to update to iOS 13.2.2 it says that the firmware is not compatible. How do I resolve this issue?
You can only update to 13.2.3 as of today. What kind of computer and what operating system? What happens when you connect the phone to your computer and launch iTunes (Filer if you have a Mac running MacOS 10.15 Catalina)?
Actually, you asked at the beginning of the thread - it is an iPhone 8 and it was purchased directly from Apple, unlocked. I've finally been able to get it to update via the phone - it took several attempts as it kept showing that 'software is up to date', even though it was 13.1.3. I guess with the death of iTunes, this is the way of the future....
While it's possible, it is not advisable. Have you tried updating on the phone? Settings/General/Software Update.
While I didn't ask earlier, what is the model of the phone? And is it truly "brand new" meaning purchased directly from Apple and still in its original sealed box?
Restart your computer, and restart your phone, then try again.
You shouldn't need to understand them. When you go to iTunes and click "Check for updates" iTunes should automatically find the right update file. If it doesn't instead choose Restore iPhone.
MBAir, MacOS 10.14, iTunes launches when the phone is connected to the computer and identifies that the phone has iOS 13.1.3 installed and that there is an update available. Phone will not update to 13.2.3., either - just attempted it. Phone was purchased new, two days ago.
Restore iPhone using iTunes resulted in the same message, "The iPhone could not be updated because the firmware is not compatible." You mentioned manually downloading the ipsw file. Is it possible to do that? Seems like one step to fix the problem rather that attempting to let iTunes do it - which is likely where the problem originated?
What model phone? How are you attempting to update?
It is an iPhone 8 and I am attempting to update it using iTunes.
What is the error message when it doesn't update?

Restarting the phone and the computer did not help. I’ve also tried booting the phone into recovery mode and attempting an update from recovery mode.
Are you letting iTunes choose the ipsw file to install, or are you downloading it separately?
I am not familiar with Ipsw files or how to manage them in iTunes. Please explain.
