repeated multiple time machine backups in 1 day

I have noticed that Time Machine seems to be running and doing backups repeatedly. There was 26 backups in the most recent 24 hour period. This should not be necessary as there has been little or no activity on my iMac (no new files added). How can I limit or control the constant TM backups?

The default behaviour is to do a backup every hour. Even if you yourself have not made any changes it is possible various apps and services have. Remember this can include something as innocuous as changes to the web browser history made each time you visit a new web page.

There is a tool that makes it easier to customise the Time Machine schedule - this is not accessible via Apple's own System Preference.
