Enabling TRIM on external SSD

Hello,

I have a Samsung Evo 860 250GB inside a UGREEN USB C Enclosure. It's connected via USB C - USB A, using USB 3.0, although the case supports USB 3.1. The SSD is the boot drive.

I tried using trimforce enable, however it isn't working. The case supports TRIM commands.

How can I enable TRIM? Is it possible?

On a separate question, can I run boot camp on my external SSD from boot camp installer?

Thanks,

J

As far as macOS is concerned, only internal drives and some

drives connected to the Thunderbolt bus can enable

TRIM. No USB drive cannot have TRIM enabled via macOS.

BTW, connecting a USB drive via some adapter to Thunderbolt won't work

either.

Also, as stated, the efficacy of using TRIM on current SSDs is questionable

and some manufacturers specifically say not to use TRIM as it interferes

with their internal SSD management hardware.

There seems to be debate on whether or not TRIM is a good idea or not:

I've always been under the assumption that TRIM does not work via USB attached drives, but not positive about this.

Also have read that TRIM is not needed with APFS, see https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/solved-trimforce-enable-not-working-in-catalina-beta.280517/

As far as running Windows on an external drive check out this article -- https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-ways-get-windows-mac/

Good luck...
