11 Pro Lens Issues!

Hi,

I found another issue with iphone 11 Pro's lenses. Apple has 3 back facing cams. One is wide(on top), one is telephoto(at the bottom) and one is super wide(mid right).

  • Open the native camera app.
  • Use the wide(1x) lens first.
  • Cover the telephoto lens(bottom) with your your finger.
  • Now, if we tap the telephoto(2x) lens option, it should make the phone use the 2x lens(bottom) which is currently covered by your finger.

-Surprise! It doesn't use the 2x lens. This means that it just cropped into the 1x lens' FOV.

  • Now try covering the ultra wide(mid right) lens and switch modes from 1x to .5x. -You'll see that it actually uses ultra wide lens. But when you switch from 1x to 2x, it just crops in.

I discovered this issue when I used a "macro attachment lens" on the 1x lens.

I could see the barrel of the attachment so I switched to 2x mode without shifting the attachment to the bottom lens.

This issue applies to Photo and Video mode only. Portrait, Pano, Timelapse and SlowMo mode seems to actually switch to the telephoto lens.

When I tap the 2x mode with the macro attachment on the 1x lens it would just crop in. But then, when I try to focus on tiny objects, the phone suddenly jumps to the actual 2x lens, where there's no macro attachment, after a few seconds.

I also tested this on my wife's 11 pro only to find out that it has the same issue.

I would upload a video on this one but this message tab only allows pics.

If you're reading this please try it yourself on your 11 pro and see if you have the same issue.

If that's true then why does it use the actual 2x lens when in portrait, pano, timelapse and slowmo regardless of distance and lighting?

At some point you could be right but I suggest you try testing that theory on your own 11 pro and see if you get consistent results.

I've already done a lot of testing on this one and have also tried different settings.

Thing is, I want full 12mp res when I take those macro shots so I could still zoom in some more at post.

If the 2x lens isn't capable of focusing that close when attached with a macro lens, then at least Apple should have a way to notify users when it's just cropping in or actually using the 2x lens.
