Preview different in Catalina?

I see various problems with Preview in Catalina. Mine is that I use it for scanning, but it no longer does an overview scan, until I click Scan. Then I can't outline what I want (mostly analog photos) and have it scan just that part.

John Galt, your answer was helpful because it made me look at everything. When I clicked "Show Details" it brought up the screen that makes an overview scan and lets me define the exact area I want. So thank you.

Yes it's different. Personally I prefer that it not to do anything until I tell it to scan, because it always chose the flatbed when I wanted it to use the sheet feeder, or the other way around.

You may find that the "Use Custom Size" selection was selected, or perhaps not. Whichever the case, toggle it to change from a fixed page size to one you can modify.

Refer to the Preview User Guide.

I used to use Vuescan after an early update to OSX made the scanner's own software no longer functional. (That scanner is no longer in use as it's SCSI and though I got an adaptor to firewire it never worked as well as originally. Then my husband got himself a usb scanner and firewire got ditched by Apple.)

I continued using Vuescan till scanning via the Print/Scan preferences improved so much I could do most things I needed to.

Transparency and translucency were first supported in PDF v1.4. Prior to Catalina (at least in Mojave) Apple's Quartz PDFContext would write PDF v1.4 documents. In Catalina, that has degraded to PDF v1.3, so these two features must be in PDF generated by applications with their own private PDF library (e.g. Affinity Designer, LibreOffice, etc.), or prior to Catalina.

Thanks for this question, which has solved a problem for which I was looking for an answer.

I usually scan via the Printer and Scanner System Preference but it's just started saving to the wrong folder (it was putting my scans in Pictures rather than the specified folder). This was with two different Epson scanners, both quite old.

I hadn't realised that it's possible to scan directly into Preview, so this has solved my problem!

I will now just scan via Preview.

BTW it gave me the overview as soon as I opened the Import window, which is ± identical to the one I usually use, apart from not having to choose a folder for the scan to be saved to.

This will save me so much time in the future!

Thanks again!
