MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise

We are testing two new 16-inch MacBook's before doing a rollout across our organization. Under low loads (25% cpu utilization), fan noise will get annoyingly loud. We're not doing any GPU related and more routine work such as: using web applications, debugging web pages, Microsoft Teams conferencing (audio/video) with a handful of people, Photos downloading from iCloud, Mac Mail downloading a new mailbox from Exchange.

We DID NOT notice this on our 2015 MacBooks and this might prevent us from continuing the 16-inch MacBook rollout in our organization.

Interested to hear others experiences.

The fans goes crazy on my machine even when is in sleep mode and I have it connected to a Samsung monitor nothing fancy. I also tried other monitors and I'm still having the same issues. I also have a Macbook Pro 15-inch 2019 i9 Vega 20 (the one that was only sold for a few months) and it works perfectly fine with the same external monitor connected, so it's definitely a problem with the MacBook Pro 16-inch, it's either the i9 or the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB, probably a software issue for the new hardware but they need to address this issue NOW because if we continue using our machines like that it will shorten their life expectancy.

Got my new Macbook pro 16" 2,6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, and i am so far a bit disappointed.

The fan is so loud, cant even sit in class without everybody looking my way.

Also my charger gets so hot that it felt like i got a burn on my skin, at one point it just stopped charging(overheat) and my computer died of battery.

Ive only had it for 3 weeks. Have been in contact with support but since i have exams i cant sent it back for a check up just yet.

I have been using Macbook Pro 2011 for 10 years and loved it. Never had a fan noice problem or overheating.

I played League of Legends for 4 years on my Macbook 2011, and never heard the fans.

But when i play LoL on my new Macbook pro 16" it overheats and fans are loader than the game, even put all graphics down to "low" in the game.

Hope this is fixable!!!

So once again, there is a disconnect here that requires more information.

I am afraid, that this 16“ MBP is a „bad idea“ of Apple. They did a really Pro Laptop again after a long time (since Ehre old 17“) but without Talking to the Pros outside or taking it out to the real world.

i thins I Spender 7k for a dream portable mac with is a nightmare to work with

why didn’t they put it in a bigger heavier case with more cooling ?

after all the heat Probs with the last MacBooks

its a shame, same with the Support. It reminds me everything to the time before Apple „for the first time“ 20 years ago. At thT time they where also very arrogant with there work

my 2 Cents

Hi again.

I guess i wasnt clear enough in my last message.

Of course i do not play games in class, i use simple tools as Excel, Word, Adobe and Google Chrome and it gets so loud.

When i did a presentation in class (connecting my computer to a big screen) the fan went insane and became very hot. (Sometimes im afraid the charger is going to start a fire, so i unplug it)

Im just saying that a computer to this price, should be able to play a simple game like "League of Legends" without overheating and shutting down. Again, i have a Macbook Pro from 2011, which works perfectly fine doing the exact same things.

The monitors aren't the problem;

I tried 3 different MBP 16" with maxed up specs, all had unreasonable fan noise. I gave up and returned back to my 2017 model (15" 2.9 quad-core i17, 16GB ram, and Radeon Pro 460 4 GB) with exact setup I had on the 16-inch model, and I have 0 problem with fan noise (the device is not audible at all while connected or not to an the same external monitor(s) I used with the 16-inch.

So, it is the 16" model that's faulty.

In my personal case if the machine is sleeping and not connected to an external monitor the fans are not running (or at least I can't hear them) but if I leave the cable connected and put the machine to sleep the fans keep running when the machine is sleeping. When using the machine I also see I big difference when the machine is connected to an external monitor, tonight I will use the machine without an external monitor and try different apps/programs to see if the fans go crazy as well without the external monitor (so far I tried the machine without an external monitor for about an hour and it worked just fine).

Thanks; I certainly don't see that at all.

i have to be doing something extreme to get the fans to kick in at all where normal web browsing and text-based tasks do not. (i9/5500.)

However I am not using a Microsoft apps like Word or Excel, either.

Same issue here. I am replacing a 2016 15" MBP and just bought a new 16" MBP today (i9 4GB 5500M). My CPU is about at 2%. I am using an external monitor with the laptop closed and the fans are as loud as they get. It is same volume as 2016 MBP when running the CPU at 100% for 30 minutes (importing 300 RAW files in Lightroom, for example).

I haven't done anything strenuous on the laptop, am just waiting for my files to download from Dropbox and doing casual web browsing (Chrome). The laptop is really hot as well. It's placed on a wooden desk with nothing anywhere near the vents and there are no obstructions whatsoever. The same spot works great with 2 other older 15" MBPs (2015 & 2016).

Is my laptop defective or did Apple release a laptop with an fatally ineffective cooling system?

Not only is this annoying, but if 2% makes the laptop overheat, what will happen when I run it at 100%? Disabling the GPU is not an option as I paid a ton for this laptop because I need a powerful CPU and GPU.
