MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise

We are testing two new 16-inch MacBook's before doing a rollout across our organization. Under low loads (25% cpu utilization), fan noise will get annoyingly loud. We're not doing any GPU related and more routine work such as: using web applications, debugging web pages, Microsoft Teams conferencing (audio/video) with a handful of people, Photos downloading from iCloud, Mac Mail downloading a new mailbox from Exchange.

We DID NOT notice this on our 2015 MacBooks and this might prevent us from continuing the 16-inch MacBook rollout in our organization.

Interested to hear others experiences.

" that Jony Ives quest to add more thinness means you have a loud noisy laptop when using it for "pro" applications. "

Well this thread is about the 16" and my fans are not noisy. I edit on Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for a living. I also had a 2018 MBP. While the fans were audible they certainly weren't noisy and if you honestly think thin design equates with high fan noise then you have very little experience with Macs. I've been using Macs exclusively for the past 25 years. This is when they were very thick and fans have always produced noise, and much louder than today's Macs.

Please read what I quoted. It's the original post. There's nothing mentioned about connecting to an external monitor. Be respectful. Don't tell me what not to write here.

I politely disagree with you. My 2010 MBP's fan was far quieter than my 2015 MBP fan, which I find so loud as to be intolerable. I used to not see it - I made fun of Steve Job's obsession with fanless computers. But starting with the "Macbook Air Pro" form factor, it was loud enough to be a show stopper.

Granted, I invite issues by always buying the absolute highest end, maxed out system, with the biggest GPU and fastest CPU. But the sound to me is on par with running a blow dryer a foot away from you.

I always wondered if the base model laptops worked much better.

I don't think people are being disrespectful, just trying to get to the bottom of the problem, and focus on what is causing the issues here. If you read the whole thread most people are having the heat problem when connected with a monitor and when it is not connected it is working as normal.

This is from Tim the original poster: "That said, it IS related to having monitors connected and the internal GPU within the MacBook, along with the CPU and the overall heat that both generate."

So you seem not to have a problem with your MacBook 16'', what I was asking is, are you using a monitor or not and have you tried with a monitor?

I had a base model MacBook Pro 16, only upgraded to 1TB storage and it had heat/fan issues. Apple gladly took it back from me, with an accompanying refund, after it failed a thermal test performed at the Apple store (it was outside of the 14 day return window and they didn’t have the same model in stock, due to storage upgrade). It was connected to an LG 4K monitor during the test. The lid on the computer was open.
