So if the signal drop is caused by the hand physically blocking antennae...

Apple is trying to convince us that this issue "exists in all smartphones" and that its caused by the hand physically blocking the antennae. Heres their education on it:

http://www.apple.com/antenna/

However, if the case is the hand blocking the antennae, as they want us to believe, then how come the iPhone4's signal problems can be reproduced without even touching the phone?

There are many videos of the phones antennae being shorted with a house key, part of a paper clip, etc, with the users hand nowhere near the phone. In fact, the person could stand 100 yards away and zoom in and see the signal gone with just a staple covering the black line.

Basically what I'm saying is, just because the result is similar does not mean its the same issue.

They should have announced a hardware fix, along with the bumpers for now. A simple polymer coating of the antennae, to reduce conductivity, would have fixed the problem, not required new FCC approval, and cost probably 25 cents per phone to implement.

Baloney.

I feel the same way about Microslop as you do about Apple, and that swiss cheese for security operating system won't go anywhere near my Intel Mac much less being installed on it. My personal money has never been spent on that garbage and never will. I would go without a computer before doing so.

Return your iPhone for payment credit. Not sure why you would want to keep a product produced by a company you despise so much. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Let your wallet do the talking. Posting the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again ISN'T GOING TO CHANGE ANYTHING for you. I'm sure you would find something wrong or to complain about with the bumper, which I'm sure wouldn't resolve your problem - nothing will and even it something did, more than likely you wouldn't admit it.

Return your iPhone for full payment credit and be done with it. If not, you are either a gluten for punishment or a paid shill, or both.

Two things. If you're going to work that hard to make an issue appear with the phone I want you to give me any phone you've ever had and I guarantee I will find a way to make an issue appear with it. Number two I've had LG phones on Verizon, my friends have had Motorolas and Samsungs on various networks, my closest friend bought the original Blackberry Storm which was a horrible device until several software updates came out to correct major issues. All these phones had some kind of issue, some involved reception, some involved other functions. No phone or manufacturer gets the media coverage that Apple and the iphone does so you continuously hear about any issue from various sources.

This is not an issue of run away acceleration or failed brakes, if you're not happy take it back they'll be happy to give you your money back. Judging by the threads that increase daily fretting about upcoming delivery dates there are probably thousands of people that would take it from you. Even with Consumer Reports judgement of not recommended at the same time they stated it's the best smart phone out there. I'm considering buying another for my wife to use so we can take advantage of the Facetime function maybe I'll get yours when it comes back as a refurb.

How so?

Each phone is shaped differently and the antenna for each phone is located at the bottom of the phone.

Not sure what difference this makes. The point being the same occurs to some degree with every smart phone which can fluctuate depending reception at the time, etc. Although I don't have dropped calls very often, I've received and placed calls with one bar of reception without the call being dropped. I've received and placed calls with 5 bars of reception and had a dropped call, and while you are on a call you aren't looking at the number of bars anyway unless using the speaker, a bluetooth headset, or the earbuds.

Its people like you that give Apple and its Fanboys a bad name. You sir have no class whatsoever. I was having a decent conversation about this problem with Edmund, there was no need for you to butt in with your unnecessary comments. No wonder some hate Apple. You Kool-Aid Drinkers try to bully your way defending anything Apple does.

Oh no Zebra. The story is only beginning. A pretty dark day for Apple. Now the court of "public opinion" and the late night comedians will weigh in. Yikes.

WOW. The arrogance on that stage this morning. Just incredible. I've had Apple EVERYTHING and iEVERYTHING.

Phone is going back. Apple failed the test. Buh-bye.

Back to a civil conversation after being interrupted by another Apple Fanboy Bully:

If the solution is not good enough a lot of people will return the phone and he won't be laughing all the way to the bank.

There's not time to test the solution out for many of us. We can't wait for the apple provided case or bumper before our 30 day return window expires. There's no guarantee that if a piece of tape works, that a bumper or case would too. This is my Primary phone, no land line and I can't do without.

What good is offering a free case or bumper now to the folks that got our phones on Launch Day ? ? The case/bumper won't be available for a week or so, but that will after after our 30 day return date. Nice timing Steve to screw your customers again. The arrogance of this company is unmatched.

No, it's matched by your obstinacy: Just take the phone back, get your money back and spare us your ranting.

oh my god. I've not seen a bigger collection of people whining about a PHONE since, well the first iphone release.

You CHOSE to buy this phone and you continue to CHOOSE to be an apple customer by not returning it. Why on earth, if you really feel like apple is sticking it to you, would you continue to take the abuse?!?

So much so that a lot of them are sticking with a product which they hate just so they won't feel left out.

That Is Pathetic.

You have a solution. If you don't like it, RETURN IT. If you don't like apple as a company, STOP BUYING THEIR PRODUCTS. I mean, constructive criticism is one thing (and there have been some posts in other threads as well as a FEW articles published) but the majority is just hyperbole or worse ranting with no basis in fact whatsoever.

If the arrogance of any company bothers you that much (personally Dell telling people they were "overtaxing" their Optiplex computers when they knew 97% of the capacitors would fail, BP with their oil spill and lobbying to release one of the Locherbie bombers, HP spying on their board members, and the cover up of the data about Avandia bother me more), don't deal with them. HP ****** me off long ago on their attitude about the timing of warranty repairs by their certified repair shops so I no longer have any HP printers.

The worst cell phone I had with antenna attenuation was a Nokia I owned about 10 years ago. It was a slide phone and once you opened it and touched anything on the top right you immediately would lose all signal. And our Mayor had a free one of these that the Nokia people gave him. They did no recall, did not acknowledge it, they just quietly quit making them. When a connector on the slide broke on mine and I went to have it repaired they just told me it couldn't be fixed, there were none available to replace it and gave me a V60t. This is not a new issue.

If you are not sure the bumper, or a case, will work for you then you should definitely return the phone and get your money back. Why take the risk especially when you no longer trust the company? I played with the the HTC Aria recently and really liked it. Just be sure when you return your iPhone that Apple notifies AT&T so your eligibility for an upgrade is restored.

So if the signal drop is caused by the hand physically blocking antennae...
