So if the signal drop is caused by the hand physically blocking antennae...

Apple is trying to convince us that this issue "exists in all smartphones" and that its caused by the hand physically blocking the antennae. Heres their education on it:

http://www.apple.com/antenna/

However, if the case is the hand blocking the antennae, as they want us to believe, then how come the iPhone4's signal problems can be reproduced without even touching the phone?

There are many videos of the phones antennae being shorted with a house key, part of a paper clip, etc, with the users hand nowhere near the phone. In fact, the person could stand 100 yards away and zoom in and see the signal gone with just a staple covering the black line.

Basically what I'm saying is, just because the result is similar does not mean its the same issue.

They should have announced a hardware fix, along with the bumpers for now. A simple polymer coating of the antennae, to reduce conductivity, would have fixed the problem, not required new FCC approval, and cost probably 25 cents per phone to implement.

There's not time to test the solution out for many of us. We can't wait for the apple provided case or bumper before our 30 day return window expires. There's no guarantee that if a piece of tape works, that a bumper or case would too. This is my Primary phone, no land line and I can't do without.

If you get clear Kapton tape and it works fine, and you are good with the look, you have your solution. I only offer this because its what I will try. I don't like the bumper look, but want to keep the phone. The nice part about nicely cut kapton tape is that it won't be very visible, and its easily reversible.

I'm the one who butted in? I've seen nothing but classless comments and butting in from the likes of you for too long. I haven't defended anything, but because I don't join in with the whine and rant fest with the likes of you, I'm a Kool-Aid drinker and a Fanboy. Never heard that before from Microslop sheep. How about something original Mr. shining example of class?

I know it is hard for some of you Microsoft sheep to grasp, but you were provided your options, and we know how you feel, which you have provided over and over and over and over and over again.

You don't like Apple - we get it.

You think Apple is arrogant - we get it.

You think Apple would not have done anything about this if it weren't for the so called media - we get it.

Steve Jobs and Apple is only interested in screwing you and others - we get it.

It doesn't matter what Apple does or says, nothing is going to make you happy - we get it.

Under the circumstances and with all of the shining example full of class statements you've made, what are you doing here? What do you expect to gain? That a fellow user will be able to resolve your problem?

You know Apple's response today and you don't like it - we get it.

You have one option and one option only - return the iPhone for payment credit since nothing Apple says or does is going to satisfy you.

Mine is going back. DARK DAY for Apple. Consumer is KING. Not Apple.

What arrogance on that stage this morning. Truly sickening and I have Apple EVERYTHING and iEVERYTHING in my house.

Apple. You are beginning to look like your careless cousin in Redmond, Washington. Starts with an "M."

Apple should not have offered free bumpers. Based on the numbers, and my own experience and others I know with the phone, it is a non-issue.

Apple has taken a lot of money out of its own pocket for all their iPhone 4 customers.

Those who don't like it, may return their phones.

Wow, you are actually against an Apple decision? That's not like you.

Apple did the right thing by offering free bumpers. There truly is a major issue with the external antenna. Based on MY experience it's not a non-issue. Every single person I have talked to with an iPhone 4 is able to replicate the issue. I like my bumper and if this is going to be the fix, I can live with that. I still want to see Apple admit the real issue instead of trying to call this issue the same issue that affects all phones though. Yes, the "deathgrip" issue that affects all phones affects the iPhone 4, but it isn't the other way around. The antenna issue that affects the iPhone 4 does not affect all of the others. There are two different signal issues affecting the iPhone 4. Apple is only claiming one of these, the one that doesn't make them look as bad since they can say it isn't only them. So far, they haven't as much as even mentioned the issue that affects only them.

Serious question: I was on the verge of returning also, but the whole press conference really worked for me for some reason. It may even get me to keep the phone.

Why did you think it was arrogant? They admitted the issue, offered apology, said it was important for customers to be happy and gave paths to that end.

So what was missing?

I have the iPhone 4, and have had it since launch day. I feel very disappointed and left-out. Even when I lick fingertips and hold the phone with damp hands, I still can't get anything less than 5 bars of 3G. I know I'm in London, where we have much better mobile coverage than the US, but I can't see what the fuss is all about. I bought the bumper wrap anyway now, because it stops the phone getting it's screen scratched when you put it on a rough surface. It's just a phone, not a child born with an arm missing. They'll fix things with the next model, which we'll all buy. I have more issues with my iPad, it's lack of flash, and especially how the great iPhone screen makes my iPad screen look like bitmapped crud.
