"downloading originals" won't go away

I've got iCloud set to download originals. However Photos constantly says there is something left to download. Even though there isn't. Is there a way to get rid of this? or double check there is something that isn't downloaded to the iMac

Error Downloading Photo (Apple ID compromised) My Apple ID was recently compromised, and I lost access to iCloud. I had a Time Machine backup containing my Photos library, but unfortunately I had selected the "Optimize Mac Storage" option and so the backup only contained low-resolution copies of most of my photos. These photos have an icon of a cloud with an exclamation point in the bottom-right corner, and clicking that shows an "Error Downloading Photo" dialog. Which makes sense, as I no longer have access to the iCloud account containing the full-resolution photo. I've (mostly) come to terms with having lost the best quality version of my photos. But is there any way to get Photos to stop looking for the full-resolution version? Right now I'm unable to edit or even export these photos without errors. I just want to move on with the low-quality versions and try to forget about this.

New MacOS installation - iCloud settings I normally don't have the iCloud Photos setting checked. I noticed before even opening photos that if I opted to turn this feature off (which I normally do) that when I unticked the option it suggested it would delete >300, then >1000 photos etc - I didn't turn it off in fact, so am I correct that by default Photos app downloads lower quality images/video to begin with, or does it download original quality provided there's enough disk space? I'm assuming lower quality, but not certain. As usual these days I find many of the Apple comments somewhat cryptic rather than clear.

Stop or reset iCloud photo download on Windows 10 I'm setting up a new computer. After installing iCloud for Windows, I clicked "Download photos" to copy all my photos to the new PC. I checked all the years, intending to download everything. This turns out to be about 8 GB of photos and video. After three days, the download appears no where near completion, and I'm not sure it's even trying. The photo counter (e.g. "Downloading 4822 photos") doesn't seem to change, but TaskManager shows the iCloud Photos process continuing to use 40 to 90 Mbps of network traffic. How can I stop or reset this?

You would have to do a photo by photo comparison, but you can check to see if the photos at iCloud.com/Photos using a computer browser match the photos in the Photos application.

How long has the sync been going on? The photos sync is very, very slow.

If you think everything has been downloaded and the sync is stuck, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (Apple ID for Catalina) and stop syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then check syncing. Allow time for the sync to complete.

Last resort - have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?
