Suddenly can't open documents in Excel

I can start a new document, but I cannot open any documents already on my iMac. When I try, I get a message that says, "The document, "whatever.xlsx" could not be opened." Help!

If you have not tried already, please restart the computer and re-try. If the problem persists then restart in Safe Mode per the directions in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262 (this can take up to 10 minutes so please be patient) and then restart normally and retest.

Finally, when posting it is extremely helpful to us if you let us know the version of Mac OS installed on the computer and the version of Office for Mac and if it is up-to-date!
