AirPods Pro High Pitched Noise

When I push my AirPods Pro into my ears I hear a really high pitched noise, similar to the mosquito sound everyone used to play. Has anyone else experienced this? When they’re off it doesn’t happen, so I’m assuming it’s part of the noise cancellation.

i did a little experimenting. this actually has nothing to do with the functionality of the airpods, so don't be alarmed. your airpods aren't on the verge of dying, it's a bit of a weird side effect. some people have pointed this out, but here's the exact explanation: chances are you heard this loud sound while having airpods in and laying down on them, and chances are also that you laid down on your right side. the pressure on the microphone and the eartip react, i'm not sure if this is intentional or a mechanical oversight, but this is the reason it happens. a few other users have mentioned this and i'll quote them below:

bennett166 says, "Don’t know if this had been answered yet but I’m pretty sure the noise happens when the AirPods are put under pressure and the noise is to help eject water"

gdcapo says, "It happened after a workout - right ear only. It had to be because of sweat. Same high pitched whistle. I went home pulled apart the Air Pods so they could dry out - for about 20 minutes - and that did the trick. This was the first time this has happened. Have owned them for about six months."

DFB77 says, "This happened to me when they got wet. In fact I put them thru the washing machine. So fairly severe. When they dried out it fixed itself up. I needed to use a hair dryer for a while but it worked."

a lot of people seem to find this issue while the airpods have been exposed to water / pressure in an enclosed space. if you'd like to test this you can take your right airpod and clutch it tightly in your hand, moving it slightly each time. eventually you'll hear a squeak. my final theory is that this is ANC reacting to a feedback loop, caused by water or pressure.

Apple finally replaced my right ear bud. This is actually a design/engineering problem. Some pointed out on Reddit that the black mesh on the ear bud may be protruding more that it should. This was in fact true for me. The mesh protrudes more on my right earbud compared to the left. As a result, whenever I try to adjust my right I’d hear a loud noice like a microphone brought close to a speaker.

I would contact Apple or take them to an apple store. If you mail them in, they will most likely be sent back to you because they may pass all the test unless the technicians wear the buds, which I doubt they do.

Hey, I am not sure how exhaustive your experiment was and how many AirPods Pro’s you tested to verify your results but I reached out to Apple and I was able to constantly replicate the issue while I was on the call with them. I asked the advisor if the AirPods Pro’s are designed to emit a high pitch noise whenever they are adjusted and he said no. So I asked for a replacement.

Again I don’t know the extent of your experiment but my replacements are perfect. I tried everything I did with the old ones and couldn’t replicate the issue. They are just fine. So if you are having this issue reach out. Don’t let people tell you to live with it or it’s not a big deal. It was a huge deal for me. I was at the point of getting a refund. Reach out, get them replaced or repaired.

my airpods are from a couple years ago to be fair, i only ever ran into the issue when i directly laid on my airpods. i could be wrong, but i figured this issue could be replicated with even a brand new set of airpods. this could also be a sign of water damage, though. that was an idea that entered my mind shortly after i posted. i dont think apple would be willing to replace airpods that are decently old, let alone ones that no longer have a receipt or box associated with them anymore. they've likely outlived their expected useful life. if you could consistently replicate this noise on your old pair and can't on your new pair, then i'm probably wrong about what i assumed earlier. maybe this is a sign of age or water damage afterall, which is interesting

Yea. My AirPods were only two weeks old when this happened. Also, obvi, Apple will not replace old AirPods or ones that are out of warranty. But in my case it was a replacement or a refund. It was very unpleasant to hear a high pitch noise whenever I tried to adjust the earbuds. And one of the reasons I pushed for a replacement or a refund was that I tried my friends AirPods and couldn’t replicate the issue. Anyways. Mine ended up getting replaced and I couldn’t be happier.

Someone on Reddit posted a convincingly probable explanation but I really don’t know. You made a good point about interference
