Can't gift an App

My Iphone will not let me gift an app. After entering the recipient's name, I am told the gift is "Invalid" and that I must enter the sender's email. Whether I input my email address associated with my appstore account or my name in the "From" line, I am given the same error message. What am I doing wrong?
