New 16” MBP Random Restarts and LockUps

On my new 16 inch MacBook Pro, when the machine is idle, I get about four random reboots a day. And, when the machine is in use, at least one lock up per day that requires a reboot.

I did not use migration assistant when the machine was set up, it is a fresh install. Hardware check shows no errors… Extremely frustrating.

This is always the message upon each random restart

BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header), no macOS panic log available

Needless to say… This is very frustrating! Anyone else had this issue?

Just an update on my progress. My prior MacBook would unexpectedly freeze for 10 seconds, then the fans would go 100% for 5 seconds, and the machine would then power off or restart. I would check the logs after this issue and get a "bad magic" kernel panic. They sent me a brand new replacement. This issue seems to be resolved with a brand new replacement. This is a hardware issue (unless you're having panics due to the most recent version of Catalina). If you're having kernel panics, bad magic issues, or unexpected shut downs/reboots, then I'd recommend to get a replacement as soon as possible. This is the only way to resolve this issue.

I spent countless hours troubleshooting the issue with Apple and sending it out for repair twice. The first repair, they only reinstalled MacOS and updated my T2 firmware. This didn't resolve it. The second repair, they replaced my Touch ID Board and Logic Board. This also didn't resolve the issue. I then requested a new replacement (since I'm still within my warranty). They approved this and were able to send me this brand new replacement. This replacement does NOT have any issues and now the issue is resolved.

Please keep in mind that Apple (US) will only send a replacement after a certain number of repair attempts (usually 2-3 attempts), if you're past the 14-day return date. So please make sure to get started on the repair process and after the second/third repair, ask for a replacement. This is the only way to resolve the issue. It was the only way for me to resolve the unexpected shutdowns and reboots with "Bad Magic" kernel panics. I have read prior that this is the only way others have fully resolved this issue. I hope you all have the same success as me!

Hey Apple - super dedicated fan here. I'd love to swap this unit out as a first-try before moving on to something else, or killing lots of time and productivity sending the unit in for repair. To go back to my 15", I'd have to take it back from my wife for a while, and cripple her productivity on her work. :(

Same problem, happened after 24 hours of unboxing and setup. Sent it back for refund and won't buy again until it looks like this is ironed out as I don't want to risk going past the 14 days return period and getting stuck with trying to do fixes via mail or the apple store in a distant city.

My Mac was doing it right after the first clean install out of the box. Of course Apple knows its thing.. but at least in my case probably it's not the system. (and btw... it takes days for a person that use the Mac to work to reconfigure it from the scratch.. there must be a solution to this.. it's already weird what's happening.. it would be even weirder if the problem is at the root of a clean OS install...).

And BTW... if I call the assistance and the only thing that they can say is to reinstall the OS... well.. I can really do it by myself.... If I call them after I've spent 7 grands... I expect at least that they know from where the problem comes from since the Mac is clean from other softwares, and how to fix it... I know I might sound a bit rude.. but this is really disappointing...

I tried everything. Reinstall, network-based install, turned off T2 security and pen-drive install, service made the same cycle and the computer keeps restarting after sleep.

The machine is in the service for almost 3 weeks now and no answer at all... I understand it was holidays and new year is coming, still a 3300€ machine which does not work properly.

Yep. I had 5 hours long call almost straight talking apple care and we achieved nothing. "we investigate it".

Laptop is still in repair service, I'm in limbo without any information or hope.

I contacted with an attorney to start to build up my case. This is nonsense. 1 month passed and nothing I can name. No timeframe, no promise, nothing...

I was still hoping that I would see an os update as I'm sure this is related at least in some way to Catalina which, from what I was able to see, is the lowest-quality mac os ever launched, but no, no one seems to be taking care of this. I was never called by anyone from apple as one of us said they got contacted and I can't afford to waste more time on this after I paid such a premium price for something that doesn't work in the right parameters.
