MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) incredibly slow!!!

Hi everyone its my first time posting so bare with me.

I have a MBP 2017 (2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, Radeon Pro 560 4 GB) that i use mainly as my editing laptop but about a year ago my problems started.

I have to lose FCPX every 20/30min because the whole laptop freezes and it doesn’t matter what I'm editing it can be my iphone video, bmpcc file or footage from any of my cameras performance is the same!

Keep in mind that i only use 1080 were not talking about 4k raw files (even tho the internet says this laptop can handle that too but I'm not counting on that) and my projects are always light by design since i don't use effects or transitions.....

First i though it's overheating but i use fancontrol to keep them runing @ max to keep the temps down and ive even tested it with a big external fan blowing on it and still no difference (intel power gadget shows temps in 50s/60s and utilization od 30/35%)

So i really dont know what to do... i do have applecare on it but I'm trying to solve this so i'm not without my laptop for weeks and all of this reminds me of the old days when my win machine would go in a processor loop and max out everything !

Any help would be greatly appreciated but so far i've tried using mac cleaners (desperate) of course nothing, closing everything except final cut... nothing, offloading my projects to samsung t5 ssd... nothing, on internal ssd.... nothing, no matter what i do the outcome is still system freeze while editing that slows everything to a 3/4fps game (minimize fcpx thats beachballing) and the whole system is in slowmo....

Please help.

The Etrecheck report is intended to be posted back onto Apple Support Communities. The report is pre-laundered of any personally-identifiable information.

When many eyes can look at it, you get better results than just once person's scanning it for issues.

If you can set its preference to "allow full Disk Access" right before you say "GO", you get a digest of issues from the last 7 days that are saved in your system.

First, get rid of CleanMyMac. It guess badly and has a reputation for throwing out important parts of MacOS.

Antivirus software: Apple and CleanMyMac

App Cleaner is also not appropriate to be using on your Mac.

You may have made a mistake in allowing Vendor software to control your drive. If this extension does not load, such as during Safe Mode or Recovery, the drive may be inaccessible. Your drives should be controlled with Disk Utility ONLY, not a vendor's driver.

SamsungPortableSSDDriverX.kext (1.5.09 - SDK 10.12)

You seem to be using both:

RadioSilence and

a VPN.

These could indicate excessive paranoia, not appropriate for speedy use of your well-protected Mac. If you are behind a Router YOU control, your devices are invisible and unreachable from the Internet and these two add-ons are not needed.

This part of the report is very troubling:

Top Processes Snapshot by CPU:

Process (count) CPU (Source - Location)

Final Cut Pro 259.37 % (App Store)

Other processes 46.63 % (?)

EtreCheck 6.01 % (App Store)

Intel(R) Power Gadget 2.71 % (Intel Corporation Apps)

DashlaneAgent.app 0.35 % (Dashlane)

It is really unusual for some other "stuff" to be using eight times what Etrecheck is using, and not have a developer-name or App store identifier behind it. You need to think long and hard about the MANY things you have loaded and running in the background, and consider a thoughtful elimination of most of them.

You are still loading and therefore running this software.

<<I was planing on doing a full wipe and just installing FCPX.>>

That is the best idea I have heard in a long time.

See if you qualify here: https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-solid-state-drive-service

To get a good look at your System config. for conflicts or issues, you can run this utility http://etrecheck.com

If you need help interpreting the report you can post it here in its entirety in the "Additional Text" box in the editing toolbar below, in your reply.

To trouble shoot further you can:

Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login and test. Reboot and test.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

Thank you for your reply i should've clarified i have a 15-inch model so the recall doesn't t apply to me.

I'll try safe booting but I've noticed a lot of things don't work properly in safeboot mode so im not sure if final cut will work properly to test it but ill try and report back the results.

Also I've purchased etrecheck a few months back but scans don't ont show anything wrong (as far as i can see)

First i DONT have clean my mac (im not mistaken nor uninformed ive had it on my laptop a year a go and after doing some research i uninstalled it and that was about a year ago)

little snitch is installed for one test i was doing but is not being used but vpn is always i dont think that has anything to do with it snce ive been using vpns for over 6 years!

Also i do use SSD's (since i do video editing its a MUST) and there is always some drive attached but after testing i havent noticed any difference between having my media on internal ssd or external (tested with 8ssd of 3 different manufacturers)

Last thing you mentioned is that it's unusual that other processes are using 46% of CPU... how can i further find out what is in other stuff and do you think thats where the bottleneck is coming from?

I was planing on doing a full wipe and just installing FCPX.

Nov 30, 2019 8:57 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Just for someone experiencing similar problems I feel like i need to further explain and emphasize that my cpu usage NEVER excedes 70/78% and during rendering i see that CPU goes in a "loop" because usage drops to 30% and the whole laptop is "@15fps".

I've took delivery of new 4t storage drive and im creating a backup as I type this, if nothing changes I'm taking it in for service.

Will post results.

UPDATE:

As suspected the problem is still here and present so it's in the process of sending it to apple.

Also a small advice (since I've been mainly reading on here) all you do is look for a "non apple" app and try to make the whole conversation about that.

Ignoring cpu bogging, temps and other technical data.

This was my fist and last post here.

Cheers.
