Airport Extreme dropping connection

Issue with client's Airport Extreme (one month old) needing to be rebooted 4-5 times daily. Clients lose internet connectivity - both wired and wireless - green light on router. Static IP assigned to router and manually entered. Installed in small office - less than 10 users - all Macintosh. Port forwarding on three ports for Daylite CRM. Firmware at 7.5.1, No guest network enabled.
Troubleshooting included:
Switched ISP from ADSL to Cable (completely different technology and modems)
Switched router out and replaced with identical router - reconfigured manually
Turned on interference robustness
Changed both wireless channels
Changed out power supply and put both modem and router on UPS

All 3 computers are having problems with Airport Extreme. Lately the network just disappears. Using airport utility, nothing is recognized. Then it will just reappear. It is happening more and more the past 3 days. Can anyone recommend a wireless router? Seriously, I loved this thing but am just too frustrated to continue and this thread doesn't make me feel any better. Mine is about 4 years old. Right now I changed channels from auto to channel 4 and all is working. I think that was just coincidence though. Wish someone would figure this one out.

I have a first generation Macbook running OSX 10.6.5 and a first generation Airport Extreme connected to Comcast via a motorola modem. I also have an iPhone and iPod touch, both running the latest version of IOS 4. The modem and router are in the basement directly below the room where the Macbook is. The router is set to WPA security. For the past year, I keep loosing the wireless signal or get it at a reduced signal. This happens on the on all 3 devices, so I ruled out a hardware problem on the Macbook. I put the router back to factory settings and rebuilt it with a new network name, no help. If it doesn't come back on it's own, I generally have to restart the modem and router. I also can see about four or five other wireless networks in the area and they seem to have the same issues. I have contacted Comcast several times and wind up being told that something is interfering with the wireless signals and it's not their problem. I'm not sure if this is the same issue but I would appreciate it if any of you think it is.

These intermittent outages have become an interesting problem. I too hail from Massachusetts but also reside in Maine for part of the year. I have an Apple Airport Extreme network in both locations and I first experienced intermittent internet connectivity outages in Maine (Time Warner) six to eight months before experiencing identical outages in Massachusetts (Charter). The outages affected both wired and WiFi connected computers. The outages also affected a computer connected directly to the cable router (bypassing the Airport Extreme). It also affected a Windows 7 computer I have on my network. Oddly, my outages occurred between the night-time hours of 6:00 PM through 7:00 AM, US Eastern Standard Time. I even purchased a new cable modem and a new Airport Extreme in an attempt to isolate the outages - they didn't help solve the problem.

Presently, I have no intermittent connectivity issues at either location. The problems simply evaporated. I have discounted signal interference, software viruses and internet worms as the cause of my internet problems. Our cable internet providers have also been very helpful in reviewing their logs for subnet saturation and claim they are as puzzled by these problems as we are. I don't think Apple software updates created these problems either. I have no clue as to what caused such widespread intermittent outages for so many people and at different times.

It's almost as if someone is probing and testing geographic segments of the internet. I'm wondering if our connectivity problems are somehow related to heightened national security levels and the steps governments are taking to intercept communications. At least for now I no longer have intermittent connectivity problems and my Airport Extreme log has not recorded any outages for the last three weeks.

It seems to me I've found possible cause of internet outages and solution.
My case: I have MB990 MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard 10.6.5), iPhone, iPad and Time Capsule 1st Generation (running 7.3.2 firmware - not the latest but the fastest one in wireless data transfer). My previous ISP gave me connection through his local network in our building and everything was perfect. Not long ago I changed ISP to another one with PPPoE-connection. After that I've got internet access disappear once a day on every of my devices and needed to reboot Time Capsule daily to fix it.
I heard that ISP's make forced disconnect of PPPoE-session every 24 hours, and my ISP does the same. I've set AirPort icon in menubar to show the connection length and started to watch logs after 23.58 hours of connection. When there was 24 hours I got PPPoE disconnected and then reconnected again. I found that uTorrent app still working with incoming and outgoing traffic, but Safari begins to say that there is no internet connection. No internet was at iPhone and iPad either. In Time Capsule logs the first entry after reconnection was that no address for NTP-server time.apple.com - where it syncs internal clock. Why does it can't find the particular server while having torrent app working? Of course because of DNS lack! I opened AirPort settings on MacBook and added another DNS-server entry (Google DNS 8.8.8.8) next to default 192.168.1.1 - and got internet back! Then I added DNS entries manually to iPhone and iPad connection settings and they begin to work too. Moreover, I tried to enter different DNS-servers including my ISP's own DNS - the same that are in Time Capsule internet settings - and everything worked with these DNS too. So the reason of internet outages through PPPoE-connection is that Time Capsule/AEBS loose DNS after PPPoE-session reconnect. The solution is to add DNS-servers manually in connection settings of every network client.
Hope this help someone.

Nothing has changed on my network since the last episodes of internet disconnects. I've had a trouble free month until today.

Hi all. Just read through this entire thread and am having similar issues.

I have an Airport Extreme that has been working absolutely flawlessly for the past 2 or so years but up until about 2 days ago, the internet connection seems to be intermittently dropping from whatever device I connect to it (my macbookpro or iphone). The network id name still shows up on the avail. networks list, but if I turn off the wifi on my mac and turn it back on to reconnect to my network, I get a prompt for the network password (which I never typically have to do), I enter the password, and I get an error saying it can't connect.

So, I go to my Airport Exterme, unplug the power, plug it back in and everything works for anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. Then the internet connection drops all over again. Nothing has changed in regards to hardware setup that would possibly have caused this issue.

It's been about a week since the last post so I was wondering if your issues got resolved or if you simply gave up and purchased a new router?

One thing I did notice, though, was when I go to unplug the power from my Airport Extreme I hear this weird almost hissing noise come from what seems to be the base station. The weird thing is though is that the noise goes away when I plug the power back in. Not sure if other people who have this problem hear the same thing and if possibly that provides a clue to the problem.

Type 2 problem with brand new AEBS. Every night it loses connection and the yellow light is on and a wired Mac Pro will report a problem in Airport Utilities.

Unplugging and re-plugging of the AEBS fixes it ... until the next day.

Can't believe Apple sells this piece of junk. Features are great, but reliable internet trumps bells and whistles. My previous DLink never gave me grief for over 5 years.

Could never get my Apple Airport Express to work with anything but the new AEBS, and now the AEBS is flaking.

Hope someone can find a fix!

I have read through this entire thread. I am also having problems exactly as described here. Airport Extreme worked perfectly until yesterday. Now wireless connection is dropping intermittently. Wired connection to my G5 works perfectly. Green light remains on solid all the time. I don't see where anyone has indicated that they have found a resolution? H E L L O A P P L E - what is going on? To many customers are reporting the same issue to have this be ignored !!!

Hi all,

I have been following this thread and I too have the "Type 2" problem since I got my AEBS earlier this month. I played with some settings on my modem and so far (1 week now) my AEBS seems to be holding out, no loss of internet connection as yet.

I read vitvit2002 posts about AEBS losing the DNS, thus I updated my modem's configuration setting (its a DLINK DSL-502T) to turn off the DNS Relay. I think you can achieve the same result by entering the DNS servers explicitly into the modem configuration. Since then all my devices (iphones, laptops etc) have been able to maintain the internet connection both ethernet and wireless instead of losing it overnight like before. It could be my DLINK is an out-dated model and it may not work for you, but so far so good over here 🙂

Another person in the dog pile here.

I've read the entire thread. I have a type2 problem. I just bought the latest model AEBS and am having similar problems as all other type 2 folks. I have updated to the latest firmware 7.5.2

I hold a connection for 5 -15 min. and then it drops, but the light on the AEBS stays green.

I never had any such problems with my Linksys. I will probably be returning my AEBS for the lasted n-type router from Cisco. Internet access is critical for my work. It's too bad too. I like the AEBS concept, but it is obvious that Apple isn't that focused on fixing it.
