Bought the APP recently and used them about 7-8 hours in total. Here is my current status.

Status Today:

  • Ears itchy and moist with swelling.
  • left Ear Canal Skin broken.
  • can hear Blood pumping in my left Ear.
  • Hearing generally muffled.
  • Tissue is worst where the Tips touched it.

General Facts:

  • used Sennheiser and Bose with Silicone for years, NO problems.
  • regular Apple Pods, NO problems.
  • IT Consultant and Diver with constant plastic/rubber/silicone/electronic device contact. NO problems in 20 years.
  • NO Allergies.

First Assumptions:

  • on closer inspection noticed strong chemical Stench coming from the Tips.
  • assuming chemical contamination.
  • primarily a material issue not a medical one as Silicone Allergies are extremely rare.

Seeking Confirmation:

  • called friend (Material Scientist).
  • due to smell she assumed Evaporation of (maybe) toxic compound.
  • speculated maybe Solvent or Plasticizer.
  • instructed me on doing a Smell Test for Evaporation.

Smell Test:

  • prepared four Ziploc Bags. (unused and aired-out, neutral smell).
  • detach Tips from the Pods and put each part in its own Ziploc Bag. Bags not too big and not too small.
  • let parts rest for two hours (longer is better) so whatever evaporates can accumulate in the Bags.
  • (prepared an extra fifth bag for the unused Small and Large Tips).
  • after two hours gently opened Bags one after the other and immediately but carefully Smell-Tested the Air inside. best to be in a well aired room and take generous breaks between the Tests so the nose can "recalibrate".
  • extra Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser Tips.

Results:

  • Bag with the unused Small/Large Tips contained a shocking amount of chemical Stench!
  • very similar to Industrial Grade Solvent or and Acidic Cleaning Solution. Smell subsided quickly but still noticeable when in close proximity to nostrils.
  • Medium Tips no better, after three days of usage noticeable chemical Stench.
  • Pods themselves only very mild (but similar) chemical Stench which vanished very quickly.
  • immediately stopped using the Tips and now keep them in a Ziploc Bag.
  • Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser FREE OF STENCH.

Conclusions:

  • there is some kind of highly toxic chemical compound evaporating from the APP Silicone Tips.
  • Tips are contaminating the Pods inside their charging case. Would explain why more sensitive users react to the whole Pod Assembly with reactions outside of the ear canal.
  • Primary Health Issues after using the APP are most likely NOT an Allergy/Infection but something similar to A CHEMICAL BURN! Ears are desperately trying to drain out out the toxic compound. Poisoned skin is drying out and dying. Infections are probably second in the chain since the skin is damaged and ready for bacterial invasion.
  • would explain the long healing process and why Antibiotics barely help.
  • GENTLY&REGULARLY CLEAN THE AFFECTED AREA WITH A Q-TIP SOAKED IN A SALINE SOLUTION TO WASH OUT THE TOXIC MOLECULES AS BEST AS POSSIBLE.
  • selling Millions of Pods with few complaints matters nothing since the reaction might only show in people sensitive to this specific compound.
  • if you lack sensitivity the compound used will STILL accumulate and might cause massive health problems long term.
  • DO NOT USE SMELLING SILICONE TIPS!
  • (checked long term APP owners. pre 2020 production batch seem to be mostly free of these issues as well as the Stench.)

What`s next:

  • Stored all the Tips airtight and leave the Pods themselves outside so they can air-out. Will do more Ziploc Smell Tests on the Pods to check on contamination.
  • IF Pods have no more noticeable chemical stench I will try third party Tips and run another Test. Results in the thread were mixed maybe due to Pod contamination.
  • Will clean affected areas with generous amounts of Saline Solution as mentioned. Two washes today already brought down Itching/Swelling considerably.
  • Will Chat with Apple Europe on Monday escalating the Issue.
  • Will contact local Labs and Universities for a proper chemical/material analysis. Essential to find out what is used in these Tips to cause such violent reactions.

I will update the post as it develops.

I had the same issue with my Power Beats Pro, Apple was useless with help for the issue. There is a company called SpinFit that makes tips for all in ear headphones, one of their models they use surgical grade hypoallergenic silicone for the tips. Since switching I’ve not had an issue. Apple is not the only manufacturer with this problem, Bose and Sony have the same issue.

Absolutely! These tips immediately made a difference. Remember your ears need some healing from the Apple tips to feel full relief.

the 3 pack costs $15.98 and you can pick 1 size instead of wasting money on sizes that you’ll never use. Medium works for everyone in my house. I have had the same set on for a couple months. The fit didn’t loosen and they are durable. I am an excessive AirPod user.

Complete with discharge from the ear, itchiness, dead skin.💁🏻‍♂️ Doctors had no idea since I have no allergies so they gave me ear drops. I forgot my Pro’s on a trip and went back to the originals and the condition improved. I sent them back to Amazon and exchanged them for a new pair. Same gross result. Tried different tips... no luck.

Its definitely the Pro’s and some material Apple is using. Just bazaar.

glad to have found this thread since my husband thinks i am crazy when i told him im allergic to my air pod pros.

took a bit of trial and error over a few weeks to pin the cause to the APP. was super excited to finally purchase these but have since given them away due to the terrible ear reactions. i did not think target would return an open product so

didnt even attempt the return. i had weeks of painful itchy ears after using air pod pros for about 30 minutes. eventually external ear canal developed crusting and discharge. was incredibly frustrating and confusing as i have NEVER had an ear infection prior. was treated for dermatitis that eventually cleared up, but sure enough after using air pods again the whole cycle re-developed.

i am not an allergic person…never had issue with skin sensitivities. this is very concerning that Apple has so many consumers with this issue and not come out with a recall on the product. My husband and kids love their air pods but unfortunately i cant share in the same enjoyment 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, I do think that's the consensus here.

For me, I've used silicone earbuds for years, from cheap to moderately expensive and I have never had a problem before. Actually, I think this is the first time I've have had a contact allergy to anything, and I'm 64. There is something in these earbuds that is different.

I did buy the memory foam tips from Amazon (mentioned above). I gave myself a week for my ear canals to (mostly) heal before trying them. They work really well, and the noise reduction is just as good as with the originals. So, I can recommend them as an option, if you are like me and did not want to return the Airpod Pros.

I had severe dermatitis in both ears after using the AirPods pro for a few days. An ENT specialist had to put me on a cortisone treatment for 15 days to bring down the infection.

It started with itching in both ears after 15-20 minutes' use, but at first I didn't make the connection and continued using the AirPods. Soon, I had discharge from the ears, and my left ear swelled up so much that I had to go to the doctor. I love those AirPods, but now I can't use them. I bought the new Beats over-the-ear headphones, which have all the Siri commands. I use those now even though they're not as portable.

I have other in-ear earphones, the Bose sport, the Galaxy Buds+, and the Bang and Oluffsen E8. They don't cause the same reaction. I'm wondering if Apple treats the earphones with some chemical I might be allergic to.

I called Apple Support and let them know that my doctor diagnosed that the airpod pros where causing the same issue that everyone is mentioning. I had to answer some questions, provide pics of my ears and doctor documentations and then they offered me a refund for the airpods. I'm trying new earpieces to see if that will help and so far, so goo, keeping my fingers crossed but i'm saying this to say, please contact apple support. The more that people do this, the more that Apple will understand that this is an issue they must look into.

Add me to the list too. My husband purchased the pros on 3/1 as a birthday gift to me and I first used them on my birthday (3/19). Within 20-30 mins both my inner ears got itchy, inflamed and red. I didn’t make the connection to the AirPods and assumed it was seasonal allergies or something. I couldn’t go to the doctor because of the quarantine so I just didn’t use the AirPod pros for a few weeks because I had to let my ears heal. Finally used them again on Tuesday, 4/7 and again within 20-30 mins the itching began. Burned all through the night and kept me from sleeping. I realized it was the AirPods causing the problem and as much as I like them I knew I had to return them as I could not justify keeping $250 ear buds that I could not use. Fortunately for me, my husband did not purchase directly through Apple. He purchased through Sam’s Club, who took the AirPods back without any questions or problems even though the AirPods had been opened, used and were purchased more than 2 weeks prior. I’ve used Bose wired earbuds with silicone tips for years and never had any problems. I can also say the irritation was only in my ear where the tips touch; no irritation on the outside from the arm. I’m just happy I was able to get my money back and I ordered Jabra Elite Active 75T earbuds to replace the AirPods pro. Attached is a picture of my ear from tonight.... you can see it is all red and peeling inside where the silicone touched.... looks almost like a burn. Maybe chemical burn? I plan to call Apple tomorrow to report.

I purchased the AirPod Pros last month and have had a severe allergic reaction in both ears. I have only wore them three times.

I went to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) Doctor yesterday and he prescribed steroids, steroid cream and sprayed my inner ear with boric acid powder to protect them from infection. The reaction is only where the tips touch and it causes swelling, burning, itchy rash and weeping liquid. I have to discontinue use.

It has been more than 14 days since my purchase and I am hoping I can still return them as they are unusable to me. Contacting Apple support today - will repost what they say.

FYI - I have no other allergies to anything.

Apple told me when I reported my issue that foam tips don't have the same noise cancelling performance, so when switching to foam tips you lose some of the sound quality.

I did order some anyway to try it and Im able to use them again. (I use only one at a time and if I have itching I switch right away, and cannot use for lengthy hours.) I think the complete blockage of outside sound, also air, causes fungal growth. If I apply the fungal/steroid prescription at the first sign of itching, my ears are fine again very quickly, and Im able to use my earbuds pro. (With the Foam Master tips from Amazon)

I wont use the silicone noise cancelling tips though and I would never recommend this product or buy it again. Apple didn’t offer me a refund, I had them a long time before my issue started.

I got my AirPod Pros 5 weeks ago. I wore them for about 45 minutes the first time and later that day my ears started itching and fluid developed in the ear canal. There was also pain on the outside of the ears and I thought I had Swimmer's Ear, which I've had in the past. I used them the next few days for short periods of time and my ears kept getting worse but I never thought it could have anything to do with the AirPod Pros as I've used the original AirPods for 2 years and all the other Ear Buds that came with my various iPhones over the years.I discontinued using them, not because I thought they were the cause of the problem, but because my ears were too irritated to put anything into them. After 10 days my ears were somewhat better but I was still experiencing excess fluid and itchiness so I went to the doctor, who diagnosed it as allergies. I used the over-the-counter meds prescribed by the doctor and my ears felt much better after 1 week. Yesterday I used my AirPod Pros for 10 minutes and within 2-3 hours my ears started itching deep inside, I had outer ear pain in 1 ear, everything sounded muffled, and they drained all night while I was sleeping. I'm going back to the doctor today after reading all these posts. The good news is I had a live chat with Apple Support and they processed a return for me, no questions asked, and will refund the full purchase price and AppleCare. I can't imagine what is so different about these Pros that would instantly cause these symptoms.

A follow up to my earlier post today. I went to the doctor today & she said I had a raging ear infection. I printed out the posts in this discussion & highlighted all the symptoms that were the same as mine by several different people. She prescribed ear drops with hydrocortisone and agreed that it appeared to be a reaction from the AirPod Pros after reading that several other people have experienced similar symptoms.

Bought These:

and these:

and my drainage, which had eventually happened, and itchiness/sores went away. I can finally wear them all day without trouble. Very happy, because I had given up on them for a couple months.
