Outlook app updating even if Background refresh disabled

It appears that the background refresh option you choose can be overrriden by Apps.

I have Outlook and have disabled background refresh for the App YET it still can update its badge count showing how many new emails I have. I contacted Microsoft and they say this is expected behaviour.

HOW can this be the case. If the App is force closed and background refresh is disabled, how did it get authorisation to poll the email servers? By disabling background refesh it stops it downloading messages and nothing more.

Another communiuty response was that messages will ALWAYS be delivered no matter what. That to me is wrong. If I want them to be delivered I would activate background refresh.

To me it is a bug in iOS and it makes me wonder what else can be overrridden without user authorisation eg location services for example and so on. Do others have these issues?

Thanks

Please check whether you have mail app listed below Background App Refresh.

What you are referring to is "Fetch" and "Push" emails. The setting for this is available under Password & Accounts. Refer to the GIF below

You may know that there two settings (Fetch and Push Mails)

Google, AOL, Yahoo - Only Fetch mail Option is available

iCloud, Exchange, Outlook - Both Fetch and Push Mail option is available

  1. Push Mail: Whenever possible the email client will push mails to all your devices.
  2. Fetch Mail: You need to set How you want it to be fetched, Automatically, Manually , Hourly,Every 30 mins, every 15 mins
    1. Automatically: will fetch when the iPhone is powered and on WiFi
    2. Manually: with fetch when you open email, open Inbox and swipe down
    3. You get an email notification as soon as the client server receives an email and your device is connected to internet, irrespective of whether the mail is in your device's Inbox or not

I already use the ios mail app but I found when I had both personal and work as soon as I update it would update all, I couldn't easily check personal without always checking work. For that reason I installed the outlook app to keep personal and work separate. But if badge notification is on, (ehich i find useful when I am using the Outlook app), it will always show you how many work emails I have. I TRY to avoid looking at work emails in the evening/ weekends UNLESS I need something.
