I accidently erased VOLUME GROUP instead of just the Mac HD- Data, so what do I do?
MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.15
I was working on Catalina . I
sont have a back up . Plus I deleted volume groups . Can I still recover data .... and what is the procedure , what I can see after I press alt key , is on end drive and below it a network to choose from , after I choose the network I see only a suitcase with a question mark ?
my loss is the data loss of my pictures , my I cloud couldn’t back up as many puctures , there are about 59,000 picture and videos & iCloud has only 35,000 . PLWASE HELP REQIRED URGENTLY . Thanks
SSDs are very difficult to recover data from. You caused the contents of an entire partition to be "void". The easiest and almost all of the time only way to recover is through backups. Data recovery teams may be able to recover your data, and are your only viable option.
Sorry. Good luck.
Hmm . That’s a sad state I am in . Will it give me good hope if I say I don’t have an ssd, but an HD . And can I do it at home after I buy a software ? And what’s the process now , such that I don’t over write and delete my HD ?
plus , can you explain what aise external Mac OS drive ?? Plus if I need to erase the whole external drive , so which external drive are we talking about ? And since the whole globe is in lockdown , can I do it at home ??
Be very careful if the data recovery app asks to make modifications to the drive with your photos because if the app makes an inappropriate or incorrect change you may permanently lose access to the data. The safe way to proceed is to make a bit for bit clone of the source drive and try recovering data from the clone so the original drive is left untouched. Of course this requires yet another drive equal or larger than the source drive.
A professional data recovery service is your best chance of recovering the data since it is so easy to make a catastrophic mistake trying to recover the photos. Data recovery is not always easy. I highly recommend you consult a professional data recovery service and receive your free estimate of the cost to recover the data.
Also iCloud is not a backup.
You do not mention where you are. In the US, OWC (macsales.com) sells external enclosures and external-open-connectors (plugs that do not encase the drive bust just attach to). They sell good drives as well. Other countries have access to other online sources. While I do not usually recommend all-in-ones from Western-Digital because of long-term reliability, anything that connects to a data port is usable. Best Buy (in the US), OWC, other online providers still send to you.
As long as you have available ports, you can connect several external drives.
But that is if you do it yourself instead of sending the drive to a service provider.

If you see "Apple HDD..." in the left pane of Disk Utility, then that should be the physical drive you need to erase as I described earlier. Erasing the drive will destroy all data on the drive.
Old versions of macOS default to the physical device view in Disk Utility and it is only with macOS 10.13+ that you need to modify the "View" within Disk Utility to see the physical drive.
Were you ever able to fix this?
Ok. Thank you. I did the exact same thing and deleted the volume group by accident and just couldn’t figure out how to fix it.
I did this too. But not when I go to reinstall Catalina, at 3 minutes remaining, it says, "Could not create a preboot volume for APFS install." Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in Advance.
Thanks. I did that too. I shut it off and then did CMD R again and it instantly went to starting recovery from the internet?
I can confirm HerrNobel’s detailed steps saved the day for me. Thank you so much.
Thankyou so much! I did try this once and it didn’t work but did a restart and then it worked ❤️ Saved me.
thank you! it worked
You're welcome.
