Manual updating of apps on iPhone 11

I understand that my new iPhone 11 (IOS 13.2.3) does not have an intuitive manual app update

feature as I used to have on my iPhone 6. (Remember that one could update a particular app or Update All if more than one update was available?)  I do not like the automatic update option, because I am not made aware of when updates have occurred or what changes they make. So, under Settings > iTunes & App Stores I have turned off [automatic] App Updates. What does this actually mean in terms of having access to newly available updates? How will I be informed that an update for a particular app is available, and how and where will I execute that update? Is my only option to turn App Updates back on? Thanks.
