iPhoto vs Photos

I upgraded to the most recent OS (Catalina) as I typically "listen" when there is an update to be made. Like some others, I cannot see any of our pics any longer, and when I click on the icon, it tells me to "upgrade to photos". Well, I don't know how to find that in the app store or otherwise. Someone else mentioned not having the spotlight see iPhoto, but i have no idea what that means. I'm hoping our pics are not lost forever? Thanks in advance for any simplistic assistance!

OK. That was short lived. I found the Photos icon in the finder, in "Photos" and it opened our pictures. Follow on question not related to photos, but maybe able to be answered - i have "old" icons for word, iPhoto, excel, etc that have a ***** circle with diagonal line through it in my dock. Can i drag those to the recycling bin to free up that space and declutter? Will that "delete" any of the pictures or are they in "Photos" now, and will any older documents associated with previous Microsoft editions still be retrievable? Thanks!

1 - yes, that will delete those apps. The iPhoto app does not contain any photos. Those are in the iPhoto Library which has been migrated to a Photos Library. If you are sure that all of your photos were successfully migrated to the Photos library you can delete the iPhoto library from the Pictures folder. Note that you will not regain the entire size of the iPhoto library as shown in the Finder because it is sharing the same master files with the Photos Library. When you delete the iPhoto library you will just regain the space taken up by the supporting files in the library and not by the original files.

2 - yes. Newer version of Word that are compatible with Catalina, MS Office 2016, 365 and 2019 Home and Student Edition, will open the older MS Office documents. Also the open source and free LibreOffice along with the Mac apps, Pages, Numbers and Keynote can open MS Office files and export them to MS Office formats or save as their own format.
