Documents not opening on new MacBook Pro

I just purchased a MacBook Pro. I upgraded to Catalina and the new software updates for Numbers, Pages and Keynote. My documents and files transferred from my old MacBook Air and are showing on my hard drive.

But when I try and open them, I get this error message:

"The document “So and So.” could not be opened. 

Same response trying to view documents in Numbers, Pages and Keynote.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
