Creating disk image, operation canceled

I saw this as a question originally in the Mojave forum, but the same problem applies to Catalina. If I attempt to create an image from a USB device (in my case, an SD card), Disk Utility fails to create an image and reports 'operation cancelled'.

I'll answer my own query. Following a bit of browsing on reddit I found that this is a security problem. The fix is:


Prefs -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy tab -> Full Disk Access (in list on left side of window)

Click on the lock at the bottom left of the screen, enter your password, then press the + button near the centre of the screen. Add Disk Utility to the list. Click on the lock again and things should work.


Now all working as it should.
