can i trade-in a phone in the USA that I bought in another country?

I am originally from South Africa and I am living in the US for a couple of years. I bought my current iPhone back home (directly from the Apple store) but now I’d like to upgrade to one of the new phones. Will the Apple store in the US accept my old phone for a trade-in?

As long as it is not activation locked you can.
