I upgraded to Catalina and now I can't Choose my old iTunes library

Hi, I have a 150GB iTunes Library with 100s of old CDs, some home recordings, and many songs purchased through iTunes Store over 15+ years. It is stored on an external hard drive (and thankfully backed up). I switched my MacBook Pro to Catalina yesterday (12/3/19). After installation, I could not get play my iTunes library anymore. Even though all the folders and playlists are still in place, there is no art work, the songs are grayed out, and when I try to play it tells me that the song is not available in my country (US). (Same on my iPhone which synchs with my MacBook

Related perhaps: I tried to go back to the previous OS through Time Machine. Backups prior to the switch to Catalina are all grayed out too. Only backups since the switch are available.

Can anyone please help?

Thanks for trying those steps and getting back to us, bploog. I'd like you to try safe mode and a new administrative user account to isolate the issue.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac -- Restart your Mac in safe mode and test how it responds. If it works while in safe mode, reboot normally and test again in your own user account. If not, continue to "How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac" below.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- If the issue is also happening in safe mode, use this article to create and test a new administrative user account. This will demonstrate if the issue is isolated to your account, or if it's system wide.

Get back to us when you can.

Cheers!

Hi there, bploog.

I see that you store your iTunes Library on an external hard drive, and it includes the music you've imported from CDs. After upgrading your MacBook Pro to macOS Catalina, you can't play any songs in the library, no artwork is showing and your songs are grayed out. This is also affecting your iPhone, and I'm glad to help.

Change where your iTunes files are stored on Mac -- Make sure that the Music application is pointing to your iTunes media files. The setting in Catalina is found under Music > Preferences > Files. If its pointing to the correct location, work through the steps in this article.

Let me know how that goes, and take care!

Hi Jeremy, thank you for getting back to me. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get this fixed. I did the first step you recommended: I set setting in Catalina under Music > Preferences > Files with the correct location and folder on my external hard drive. I did "Keep ... Organized." Still all grayed out.

I went to the article you referenced. It's written for iTunes app (old OS ?) not for Music app (Catalina). I still went through the first suggested step: File > Library > Organize Library ... > √ Consolidate files. It started copying things for a while. Then along the way at some point, Music app gave me the beach ball and I had to Force Quit because Music app wasn't responding.

The other points in the article you referenced. I don't even understand if these points are relevant for my problem.

I am probably doing something stupid but I still don't know how to fix this.

BTW, interestingly: When I first ran into the problems I decided to just go back to the old OS and forget about all. I should have waited a bit longer to see if upgrading to Catalina was safe and worth it. So I went to Time Machine. Everything before the installation of Catalina was grayed out, too, so I couldn't even go back and restore to the old OS.

First of all, Thank You, Jeremy_v and Chris_g1. I am already major steps ahead but not all issues are resolved. I first went back to a backup version of iTunes, just before I installed Catalina. Then went through the steps again that Jeremy_v suggested. This time more success -- I have my old Playlist Folders and Playlists back, about 160 GB worth -- and I didn't have to go through the steps yet that Chris-g1 suggested. However, there are still some issues which I don't know how to resolve:

(1) Some artwork didn't transfer over, which is unfortunate particularly for the "home-made" CD collection over many years.

(2) The Purchase list never showed up on my iPhone.

(3) When I connect my iPhone, go to Synch Setting > Photos (on my MacBook) with Music app, the albums with photos and video clips I have specified on Photo app still do not show up on my iPhone.

(4) I still cannot go back on Time Machine to a backup before Catalina was installed.

(5) Not sure which files and folders in my old iTunes folder are still needed and also not sure where to put the newly created "Music 1" folder which apparently now contains the library for the Music App.

I can live with all that but it'd be nice if the transition to Catalina would work perfectly.

Hi again,

The more I look into this the more screw-ups I discover. One problem is that I don't know how the new folders and files are organized. I still have the old iTunes folder with all the regular files in them but when I pointed Music app to that (as suggested which at least seemed to solve some of the problems), it asked me to create a Music folder, which I could name and specify the location for. It's for now residing outside the old iTunes folder. So what folders and files are superfluous? Where should the Album Artwork folder be? At what level should the Music Library.musiclibrary be? In iTunes Media which was created in the old iTunes folder? Is there a chart for the proper nesting of all the folders and files under Catalina? I don't want to carry duplicate files or orphaned files around. My iTunes folder was 180 GB at some point so I don't want to inflate this with unnecessary outdated or even disruptive old files that also take up space.

The problems I am still having:

(1) I have all previous Playlist Folders and Playlists in Music now but not all Artwork was transferred but others have (not dependent on whether it was a commercially purchased CD, bought from Apple, or home-made including artwork. In all categories some artwork is there and in others it's not). I really see no systematic pattern here.

(2) I have all previous Playlist Folders and Playlists in Music now but some Playlists (stand alone or in Playlist Folders) only have the shell but no songs included. So it looks the same as it used to be but lots of actual songs are missing in the Playlists or Playlists embedded in Playlist Folders, even though it appears that all the files are still somewhere in Library (but a nightmare to recreate all the organization I had from so many years).

(3) I would like to go back to the pre-Catalina OS but Time Machine won't let me do this. I thought I was acting cautiously and responsibly for having backed up everything before the attempted switch to Catalina but now I am really in bad shape because I can't go back but I also cannot make Catalina work properly. Some commercially bought software is not even available yet for Catalina which puts me in a bad situation too. This switch to Catalina has resulted in a huge loss of productivity for me.

When I call 800-Apple tech support, I will be charged for service calls which I find unfair. I have bought all my software and music responsibly and legally, so I think it would be Apple's responsibility to make sure that customers get a smooth transition to a fundamentally OS if Apple decides to make drastic changes perhaps prematurely before things were tested out sufficiently. At the very least I would have appreciated a fair warning. The synching between Mac OS, iPhone, and iPad worked perfectly well before. I wouldn't have switched.

I have been using Mac since 1984 and have been a very loyal Apple fan ever since. But now I start considering of switching to an alternative platform with less monopoly ambitions and go back to user-friendliness which was the biggest selling point for Apple initially. We were proud not to have to travel with our private computer technician just to use a laptop computer. Now it seems that Apple has switched sides. Very disappointing.

Hi Jeremy-v,

The article you suggested is in reference with Mojave 10.14, not Catalina. All worked well under Mojave. The problems started after the switch to Catalina. Your suggestion to make Music app (no more iTunes app) point to the old iTunes folder was partially successful after a couple of tries but see below. Still problems with missing Artwork and empty Playlists and Playlist Folders even though all songs seem to be in my Library. But recreating the old organization would be a nightmare. I don't know what "Keep Folders organized" and "Organize Library > Consolidate Files" is supposed to do.
