podcasts eating up cellular data

i use the podcast app to stream podcasts. all automatic downloads are disabled and yet i am using 150 - 250MB per hour streaming podcasts. in other words, the app is using about as much data as an SD movie.

how is this possible? and what can be done about it?

i feel like vendors are pushing content at unnecessarily high resolutions, making me think they’re getting kick backs for using more bandwidth.

You can set Podcasts to not have access to Cellular Data. Open Settings | Cellular, and scroll down to "Podcasts" and turn it off. Your podcasts will then only download via WiFi. While you are in Settings, look at all of the other apps on your phone and decide, one by one, if each app should be allowed to use cellular data or wait for a WiFi connection.

I'm sorry that WiFi is not an option for you. You did not mention that detail in your original post, so how could I possibly miss a point that you did not make?

My podcasts consume about 14GB WiFi and 100MB Cellular data each month. I have no idea about your lifestyle, so I can't comment about your consumption. All I can do now is recommend that you take note of which podcast is consuming data and ask the maker of that podcast for help. Apple adds negligible overhead to the podcast payload, so any bloat would be in the payload, which is beyond Apple's control. The only other factor is if you are routinely in an area of poor cellular reception, you may suffer from packet retransmissions to correct errors. Good luck.
