Canoscan 8600F and High Sierra

I know Canon no longer supports High Sierra on this scanner, but it worked just fine for me until recently.

I installed the Canon software a long time ago, probably under Lion or even before that. It kept working perfectly through every version of MacOS, including the present High Sierra.

I recently did a clean reinstall of High Sierra, and now the Canon software won't even install.

Did it work before just because it was already installed from earlier version of MacOS?

I mean, it obviously does work on High Sierra, but just can't be reinstalled. Seems crazy.

I searched for the Scangear program, which is part of the Canoscan Toolbox package, and found that Scangear on its own is available for all MacOSs up to and including High Sierra. But on the Canon download page, there's also a note stating that ICA drivers must be installed in order for Scangear to work, and there are ICA drivers for High Sierra. So I installed just the driver, then installed the old version of Canoscan Toolbox, which supposedly only supports Lion, and bingo, it works like it always did on High Sierra.

This is where the driver lives on the Canon Canada support site:
