MacBook Pro 16 usb-c charging issue

Hello,

I have bought a 16 inch MacBook Pro a few days ago and today after using dongle to connect external display via HDMI the whole day it was running fine. At some point I closed the lid and after I open it up the MacBook screen was black (flickering between grey and black) and there haven't been any picture on external monitor. Immediately I removed the dongle and picture was back on MacBook screen but after that if the charger is plugged in into Mac firstly it says battery is not charging and then after some time it starts charging but takes a while to calculate estimated time. Currently still if the charger is plugged firstly it says battery not charging but after while it start charging.

Spoke to the AppleCare support and representative said the most likely it is a hardware issue. We reset SMC multiple times and still nothing.

Anyone any other suggestion?

Most displays are underpowering, at less than the 96 Watts required to charge-and-run that 16-in MacBook Pro.

Use the power adapter, plugged in first, and it should preferentially charge from the power adapter.

I figured up, that maybe the monitor doesn't give enough power to the MBP, so I connect as well the charger. But issue still occurring some times, after the MBP goes to sleep mode, when is back, external monitor doesn't show nothing and I have to restart the MBP. One solution I found was, disable sleep mode to the MBP, never goes to sleep, so is not happened any more.

to get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• on invoking Option-(Detect Display) button in Displays preferences

so try doing some of those things and see if the display comes alive.

Modern Displays with multiple ports are sometimes busy scanning the other ports, looking for an input, and miss the query from the Mac. They need to pay attention to the port you are actually using, or they will miss the query.

Some displays have On-Screen Display settings that can be used to tell the display a computer is attached on a certain port, or a certain port should be highest priority. Changing those may make your display more responsive.

Some displays include their own private "sleep" settings for the display alone. This can allow the display to enter its own sleep mode, on top of the Mac's not sending it data. A display that is sleeping on its own cannot respond to the Mac's query, and will stay dark.
