iCloud photos/Delete

Hello, I recently added photos that are stored on my iMac to iCloud. I would like to turn iCloud off on my iMac now, as there are way too many photos and it's taking a lot of storage. If I turn iCloud off on my iMac, will the photos that are on that device be deleted off from the device? thank you for the clarification!

The extra photos crossing the designated storage limit will not be saved on the iCloud server , turning off iCloud if you mean sign out fom system preferences > iCloud is not related with photos , for that either you delete extra photos https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/photos/pht3bfab2f96/4.0/mac/10.14

Or purchase a new storage plan https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT201318
