Frequent iCloud notifications, but I don't use iCloud

With some frequency, my Macbook Air will give me the notification, "This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem." Each time I click "Later" to make the notification go away, but of course it keeps coming back. If I instead allow the prompt to take me to iCloud preferences, it asks me to log in to iCloud.

I'm not logged into iCloud on purpose. I've never used it, and I have no interest in ever using it in the future. How do I stop this notification from recurring?

Thanks, but when I go to System Preferences/iCloud, there are no boxes to uncheck, only a sign-in field. I would rather not ever be signed into iCloud on any device. I would prefer to completely disable iCloud and get no notifications for it. Seems pretty perverse if the only way to avoid iCloud notifications is to be permanently signed into iCloud.
