iPhone doesn't automatically sync with MacBook

I'm on the latest version of iOS and MacOS. I physically connected my iPhone to MacBook using cable and did an initial sync. I also selected the option to sync automatically via WiFi. Both devices are on the same WiFi network. I then later connected my iPhone to power (directly to the wall) and was expecting to see the device popup on Finder automatically (for syncing). That didn't happen. What am I doing wrong?
