Can’t get past Recovery Assistant.

My computer will not reboot. When I turn on, it goes to the recovery assistant. It looked like it reset my password, but when I go to restart, It won’t turn on again.

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.15

Run Disk Utility (available in Recovery). Use repair disk/First Aid and check that your Boot drive is free of Directory errors.

Once free of Directory Errors, if won't restart after that, your MacOS is damaged and you will need to re-install it. By design, re-Installing in place is not intended to overwrite your files or added Applications.

But if your drive is having problems already, and you do not have a Trusted Backup, you could lose everything. In that case, get a new drive in an external enclosure and install MacOS on the external drive, reserving your old drive as a backup drive. Then use tools like Data Rescue to make excursions onto the damaged drive to look for files.

Do not attempt to start up from a drive that may be damaged, as more of your files will be lost that way.
