I've connected my MacBook Air to my new iMac using a Thunderbolt cable and adaptor (thunderbolt 2 to 3) but it is not mirroring the display from the laptop when I press Command-F2. The iMac is new and the Macbook Air is 2 years old.
A new iMac does not support Target Display Mode.

Not with a thunderbolt display cable connection.
You will need to use a VNC client.

Excellent. I bought Remotix and I'm up and running with screen sharing already.
